Syracuse (2-9-2, 0-4-1) constructed a 2-0, first-half margin, and withstood a second-half comeback by #17 Wake Forest (8-1-3, 2-1-2), to emerge with a 2-2 draw on Thursday evening at the SU Soccer Stadium.
Erin Flurey and Raia James scored in the first 45 minutes for Syracuse. Anna Swanson and Hannah Johnson found the net for the Demon Deacons.
FLUREYÂ PROVIDES ORANGE WITH EARLY EDGE
Redshirt sophomore Erin Flurey, Syracuse's top goal-scorer this fall, put her team on the board first. Senior Hannah Pilley slid a pass forward to Flurey, who penetrated the middle of Wake Forest's defense and tallied her fifth goal of the year with a solid strike. Flurey's shot, at 27:09 in the first half, put the Orange ahead, 1-0.
JAMES EARNS FIRST COLLEGIATE GOAL
James, a senior, found a great time to score her first collegiate goal. With the clock winding down in the first half, sophomore Anna Ruppert crossed the ball to James, who redirected it into the lower corner of the Wake Forest cage. The play came at 41:20, and helped Syracuse enter the intermission with a two-goal advantage.
THE DEMON DEACONS RALLY
Wake Forest upped the attack in the second half. The Demon Deacons accumulated 23 shots after the break and the effort paid off.Â
Swanson shaved the Syracuse advantage to 2-1 with an unassisted goal at 56:34. It was her second of the season. Just under 20 minutes later, at 75:08, Johnson earned her second of the fall following a scramble in front of the Orange net.
ANOTHER SHEA SAVE
Syracuse goalkeeper Shea Vanderbosch, a sophomore, had another stellar performance guarding the net. The ACC leader in saves and saves average, Vanderbosch finished with 12 stops, including 11 in the second half. It marked the second time these season she posted double-digit saves -- the other was a 16-stop effort against #3 Florida State.
Vanderbosch helped preserve the tie with a number of key stops, including two in the final 10 minutes. The first was a point-blank drive by Emily Murphy at 80:58 that Vanderbosch knocked down. She was tested again by Murphy at 84:54 and came out with the stop.
