11/12/2023 3:00:00 PM | Field Hockey
The first season of the Lynn Farquhar Era for Syracuse field hockey came to an end in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon when #11 Syracuse lost to #3 Duke, 2-1 on Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium in Durham, N.C. The Orange conclude the season under their first-year head coach 11-8 overall.
Pieke Van de Pas scored from the top of the circle 10 minutes into the game to put Syracuse ahead 1-0. It was her 11th goal of the season.
The Blue Devils (18-4) evened the game on a penalty stroke converted by Alaina McVeigh for her 17th goal of the season to make it 1-1 in the final minute of the second quarter.
Duke scored quickly coming out of the break when Hannah Miller got a stick on a pass from Kira Curland 25-yards outside the scoring circle. After a review, the goal was confirmed for a 2-1 Blue Devil lead.
McVeigh took Neitch one-on-one after sneaking by Eefke van den Nieuwenhof in the 34th minute but Neitch made a kick save to stop the Blue Devils opportunity.
The second half was a back-and-forth battle with Syracuse having three penalty corner opportunities but were unable to convert. Duke held off a strong forth quarter press from the Orange to advance to next weekend's NCAA Semifinals at Karen Shelton Stadium in Chapel Hill.
