CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - No. 22 Syracuse continues postseason play at No. 9 Virginia in the ACC Quarterfinals Sunday, Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. (ACC Network). The six-seeded Orange will square off against Virginia, who is the three seed.
Tickets for the ACC Championship Quarterfinal match on Sunday, Nov. 5 will cost $8 for general admission and $12 for reserved seating. Gates will open at 1 p.m. and tickets can be purchased here.
Students from any ACC member institution will be admitted free of charged with a valid school ID.
'Cuse Update
Syracuse's offense erupted in the ACC First Round contest versus NC State. The Orange netted five goals, the most in an ACC Tournament match in program history. Four of the five goals came from players entering the game off the bench, highlighted by graduate student Daniel Diaz Bonilla's two goal, two assist performance.
Diaz Bonilla became the fourth Syracuse player to score two goals in an ACC Tournament match, joining Chris Nanco and Jonathan Hagman, who both netted two on Nov. 2, 2016 in 'Cuse's 4-0 Quarterfinal win over Pittsburgh at the SU Soccer Stadium. Ben Polk also scored twice on Nov. 11, 2015, in Syracuse's 2-0 win over Clemson in the ACC Semifinal game.
The graduate student also became the first Orange player to record two goals and at least one assist in an ACC Tournament game.
Diaz Bonilla and graduate student Felipe D'Agostini became the first players to register two assists in an ACC Tournament match.
Senior Jeorgio Kocevski earned his 11th assist of the season on D'Agostini's goal. Kocevski tied Marcello Vitale (1982) for the most assists by a senior in program history. The Liverpool, N.Y., native is also tied with Scott Owslany (1984-87) for the ninth-most assists in program history with 17.
Kocevski became the fifth player in program history to record double digit assists in a season. The Liverpool, N.Y., native joins Marcello Vitale (1982) and Julian Buescher (2015) 11 assists, Jarett Park (2001) 14 assists and Steve Morris (1989) 16 assists.
With an appearance in Sunday's game, graduate student Noah Singelmann will become the fourth active Division I player to reach 90 career games. Singelmann will join Washington's Imanol Rosales (93) and Christian Soto (94) and Indiana's Maouloune Goumballe (101).
ACC Tournament History
Syracuse is 8-4-5 in the ACC Tournament. The Orange are 6-0-0 when playing games at the SU Soccer Stadium. This is the first time Syracuse is the No. 6 seed in the tournament. 'Cuse has been the No. 2, 5, 7, 10 and 12 seeds. All time, the Orange are 8-1-3 when they are a top-seven seed and are 2-1-2 in the ACC Quarterfinals.
Sunday will be the third time Syracuse will play Virginia in the ACC Tournament. The two teams most recently played in the 2022 postseason when the Orange won a 2-2 draw in penalty kicks, 5-3, on Nov. 9, in the ACC Semifinals to advance to the championship game.
'Cuse and the Cavaliers first met in the ACC Tournament in 2019, when Virginia won, 2-1, in the quarterfinals in Charlottesville.
Scouting the Cavaliers
George Gelnovatch is in his 28th season at the helm of the Virginia men's soccer program and holds an overall record of 371-155-70. The Cavaliers finished the regular season with a 10-3-3 overall record and a 5-2-1 record in conference play.
The Cavaliers are led by Stephen Annor Gyamfi, who has 10 goals this season and seven in conference play. The freshman is tied with Notre Dame's Matthew Roou and Eno Not for the second-most goals in the ACC, behind Duke's Forster Ajago, who leads the league with 13 scores.
Mouhameth Thiam is second on Virginia with five goals and 14 points, while Paul Wiese has seven assists.
Holden Brown and Joey Batrouni have split time in net for the Cavaliers. Batrouni made five of the eight starts during ACC play, posting a 4-0-1 record with a 0.40 goals-against average and a .882 save percentage with three clean sheets.
Series History
Sunday's match will be the tenth all-time meeting between Syracuse and Virginia. The Cavaliers hold a 5-2-2 advantage in the series. This will be the third time the teams will meet in the ACC Tournament. The first match took place in the 2019 season. Sunday's contest will also mark the seventh straight season the two teams will face one another.
In the 2022 postseason matchup in Syracuse, Jeorgio Kocevski scored on a penalty kick at 26:45 and Lorenzo Boselli scored at 83:46 to level the game at two before the Orange won in penalty kicks, 5-3.
