CHARLESTON, S.C – Syracuse softball finished its time in Charleston with a 7-2 loss to Rutgers. The teams split their two-game series, as the Orange beat the Scarlett Knights in extra innings on day two of the tournament.
Â
Left-handed pitcher Lindsey Hendrix started in the circle, as the junior pitched four innings, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks. Kaia Oliver and Madison Knight appeared in the circle in relief. Sophomore Taylor Posner and senior Yamila Evans both drove in runs as pinch hitters.
Â
Syracuse is now 6-6 heading into the first weekend of Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Orange went 3-2 at the Lowcountry Classic.
"I'm happy with our growth, our pitchers did a good job minimizing free bases after the first game," head coach Shannon Doepking said on the Lowcountry Classic. "We had different people step up and contribute when we needed it. People coming off the bench did a great job contributing this weekend."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
In the first frame of action, the Rutgers bats produced a run. Kyleigh Sand started the contest with a line drive single to center field. Sand stole second and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Junior outfielder Morgan Smith drove Sand home with a sacrifice fly, 1-0.
Â
Rutgers manufactured insurance runs, adding two runs on a Ryann Orange home run in the third inning, 3-0. More Scarlett Knight runs arrived in the fifth inning. A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases for pinch hitter Taylor Fawcett. The senior sent a single up the middle, scoring two runs, 5-0. Rutgers ended its half of the fifth with two more runs on a sacrifice fly and a fielder's choice, 7-0.
Â
The bottom of the sixth saw 'Cuse cut into Rutgers' lead on four hits. Angel Jasso reached first on a bunt, setting up an RBI double from Posner. In the following at-bat, Evans roped a single to right field for another run, 7-2.
Â
Syracuse finished the game with two runs on five hits. The Orange did not commit an error for the fifth time this season. Rutgers starting pitcher Raimy Gamsby logged six innings, allowing two runs on five hits.
