
Orange Earn One Win In Doubleheader At Binghamton

VESTAL, N.Y. - Syracuse Softball and Binghamton each took a game in the doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. In game one, catcher Laila Alves led the Orange to a 4-2 victory with two runs batted in. Binghamton earned a 12-3 run-rule victory in game two.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE:
The Orange (15-22-1, 4-12-1 Atlantic Coast) offense started to click early, scoring the first two runs of the contest. Outfielder Madelyn Lopez provided 'Cuse with a leadoff baserunner, advancing to first on a hit by pitch. Infielder Tessa Galipeau worked a walk, putting two runners on. With one out, outfielder Angel Jasso sent a single up the middle, bringing in Lopez for the first run. Alves knocked an RBI single between first and second, 2-0.Â
The hosts pulled a run back in their half of the first. Outfielder Laney Harbaugh worked a leadoff walk and stole second base, putting a runner in scoring position for infielder Brianna Santos. The redshirt-sophomore drove a single for Binghamton's (21-13, 7-4 America East) first run, reducing Syracuse's lead, 2-1.
Binghamton leveled the scoreline in the fourth. With two runners in scoring position and one out, catcher Hailey Ehlers roped a double off the wall, scoring the tying run, 2-2.Â
Syracuse restored its two-run lead in the following frame. Galipeau advanced to first after being hit by a pitch, advancing to second with a single from Jasso. In the following at-bat, Knight logged her second hit of game one with an RBI single for the go-ahead run, 3-2. Alves put a ball into right field, doubling the Orange advantage, 4-2.Â
The Orange finished game one with four runs on six hits. Knight threw her fourth career complete game, striking out a career-high seven batters while allowing two runs on five hits and two walks. Alves led Syracuse at the plate, logging two hits and two RBIs in three at-bats.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO:Â
Syracuse maintained its offensive momentum in the second game, scoring first in the first inning. With two outs, infielder Kelly Breen blasted a solo home run past the centerfield wall. A sophomore from Placentia, California, Breen leads the Orange with four home runs.Â
After two scoreless frames, Binghamton pulled ahead with a two-out five-run rally in its half of the fourth. Outfielder Sarah Rende drove a ball to the left field gap for a double, followed by a walk from Santos. The Bearcats loaded the bases after designated player Sophia Pappas was hit by a pitch. Pinch hitter Emma Lawson put Binghamton in front with a two-run RBI single, 2-1. The Bearcats capped their scoring run with a three-run home run from infielder Gabby Guerrero, 5-1
In the fifth inning, Syracuse trimmed the Binghamton lead. Infielder Ryan Starr got on base with a ground ball single, stealing second to put a runner in scoring position for Gallipeau. The second-year infielder lined a ball just above the left field wall for her second home run of the season, reducing Binghamton's lead to two.Â
The scoring continued in the bottom of the fifth, as the hosts added seven runs. With the bases loaded, Santos hit a single down the left field line, driving in two runs, 7-3. Back-to-back hits from Pappas and Ehlers scored two more runs, 9-3. Infielder Akira Kopec ended the game with a three-run RBI double.Â
Syracuse finished with three runs on six hits. Left-handed pitcher Lindsey Hendrix started the game in the circle, allowing five runs on five hits in four innings.Â
UP NEXT:
Syracuse travels further south to Easton, Pennsylvania on Saturday, Apr. 22 for a three-game series at Lafayette. The Orange return to New York on Wednesday, Apr. 26 to wrap up their road trip at Cornell.Â
