'Cuse Opens Penn Relays

The historic Penn Relays started on Thursday for the Syracuse track and field teams, with five events occurring on the opening day for SU runners.
Kevin Robertson placed third in the 3000-meter steeplechase, finishing in 8:44.15.
In her first race since the Stanford Invitational in March, Amanda Vestri set her 5k time of 16:01.30 in the 5,000-meter run. She was fourth overall in an event that featured nearly 70 competitors. Olivia Joly (16:54.17) and Ivy Gonzales (17:09.57) also raced for the Orange.
Silas Derfel ran a time of 14:10.05 in the men's 5k, which earned him 20th. Jack Whetstone (14:35.30) was the other 'Cuse competitor in the race.
Shaleah Colaire finished 15th in the 400-meter hurdles, racing to a time of 1:00.45. In the men's race, Elijah Mallard (52.82 seconds) also took 15th to lead a pair of 'Cuse men across the line. Xayvion Perkins finished 17th in 53.21 seconds.
The bulk of the action will continue on Friday from Philadelphia.
