5 Score in 10ks on Night 1 of ACCs

Paul O'Donnell narrowly missed his second ACC Championship of the year, placing second in the 10,000-meter run, while 'Cuse collected three of the top-six finishers in the women's 10k on night one of the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
O'Donnell, who claimed the ACC 5,000-meters title at the indoor championships in February, broke off in the lead pack and turned in a blazing final split of 55.85 seconds, to be edged at the line by Notre Dame's Carter Solomon for the title. Solomon (30:18.84), bested O'Donnell by 0.12 seconds to win gold.
In addition to O'Donnell's runner-up performance, Syracuse also got points from freshman Assaf Harari's eighth-place finish. His time of 30:30.82 pitted him as the fastest rookie in the event. Alex Comerford (30:35.78) finished 13th, followed by Nathan Lawler (30:43.02), Silas Derfel (30:47.53) and Jack Whetstone (30:58.73) in 18th, 19th and 21st, respectively.
The women also had a strong performance in the 10,000-meter run. Similar to the men's race, a three-runner lead pack eventually broke off, with Amanda Vestri in the mix. NC State's Katelyn Tuohy (32:56.75) pulled away late for the title, but Vestri took bronze with a time of33:16.46. Sophia Jacobs-Townsley collected her first career All-ACC accolades in a time of 33:41.77, which was a personal best and gave her fourth overall, while Savannah Roark finished sixth in 33:45.91. Ellie Lawler (34:40.91) took 12th, while Shona McCulloch finished 19th.
The day also featured six preliminary races. Xayvion Perkins and Elijah Mallard both advanced to Saturday's final in the men's 400-meter hurdles. Perkins crossed the line in 51.83 seconds, while Mallard finished in 52.08 seconds. The duo finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
Shaleah Colaire turned in a personal best time of 59.00 seconds in the women's 400-meter hurdles, but was left 0.08 seconds shy of qualifying for Saturday's final. Teammate Kirstyn Schechter finished in 1:03.89.
Another near miss came in the men's 1,500-meter run, Nathan Henderson (3:42.38) was the top finisher not to qualify for the finals. He took 11th, while teammate Karl Winter (3:44.00) finished 14th.
Caroline Kirby (4:32.49) and Shanley Koekemoer (4:33.19), each turned in personal bests in the 1,500 for the women, finishing 23rd and 25th, respectively.
Trei Thorogood finished 11th in the 200-meter dash, crossing the line in 21.13 seconds, followed by James Nmah in 21.90. Kaleia Arrington (25.14 seconds) finished 25th in the women's race.
The 'Cuse women sit in fourth with 14 points after night one, while the men are in 11th with nine points. Action continues from Raleigh on Friday and concludes Saturday.
