KINGSTON, Jamaica – Syracuse University's Charlotte de Vries will have the chance to partake in a different kind of field hockey event this summer: Hockey5s.
De Vries, a 2023 Syracuse graduate, has been named to the inaugural United States Women's National Team (USWNT) Pan American Hockey Federation (PAHF) Hockey5s Pan American Cups (PAC). The 2023 Hockey5s Pan American Cups will be held at Mona Hockey Field in Kingston, Jamaica from June 4-11 as part of the 2024 Hockey5s World Cup qualifying. The 10 athletes and three reserves were selected after a training camp in Durham, North Carolina.
De Vries was one of the 10 athletes selected by USWNT Hockey5s head coach Rachel Dawson for the upcoming event. Hockey5s is a small-sided outdoor game that utilizes four field players and a goalkeeper. The 20-minute games are played in 10-minute halves on a smaller playing field with limited stoppages in the high-scoring games.
The program's first-ever four-time all-American, de Vries has nine international caps to her credit. Last fall she served as a co-captain for the Orange, earning Second Team All-ACC honors. De Vries played in all 22 games as a senior forward, logging 40 points on 14 goals and a team-best 12 assists. Half of the Malvern, Pennsylvanian's goals were game-winners, including the go-ahead goal against No. 7 Princeton in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
In her four years at Syracuse, de Vries has 99 points with 40 goals and 19 assists, playing in all 75 games of her career with 71 starts. Her 99 points rank seventh all-time at Syracuse, while her 40 career goals are tied for the sixth-most by a 'Cuse player.
