
Anthony Retires After Prolific NBA Career

Carmelo Anthony, who put together the single most productive campaign in Syracuse basketball history, announced his retirement from the NBA on Monday, May 22.
Anthony forever endeared himself to Orange fans in 2002-03, earning consensus Freshman of the Year recognition and NCAA Final Four most outstanding player honors after helping Syracuse to the 2003 championship.
He was selected third overall by the Denver Nuggets in the 2003 NBA Draft, Anthony had a 19-year NBA tenure. At the time of his retirement, Anthony ranked ninth in career scoring with 28,289 points. In addition to his eight seasons with the Nuggets, Anthony played with the New York Knicks, Oklahoma City, Houston, Portland and the Los Angeles Lakers. His time in the NBA also included the following highlights:
Anthony averaged 22.2 points and 10.0 rebounds per game with the Orange, and ranked second and first, respectively, among NCAA freshmen in the two categories. Among his other accomplishments in 2002-03 were:
Anthony has maintained close ties with Syracuse. He made one of the most significant student-athlete donations with the lead gift toward what became the Carmelo K. Anthony Basketball Center. He had his jersey retired by the program in 2013, and most recently returned to campus for the 20th Anniversary celebration of the 2003 NCAA Championship team.Â
