CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Big wins and rookie debuts highlighted the weekend in Charlotte for several former Syracuse University men's lacrosse players. The Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) made its second stop of the summer, hosting four games at American Legion Memorial Stadium.
Redwoods LC Beat Waterdogs LC 10-9
Cole Kirst made his professional debut, helping the Redwoods overcome a 6-0 deficit. Kirst, who is completing his master's degree at Syracuse, finished with two goals and one assist. He collected his first professional point with an assist to Wes Berg in the second quarter. Kirst braced the third quarter with two goals, tying the game at 6-6 and putting Redwoods up 8-7 with 13 seconds left in the period. Kirst picked up a crucial ground ball that led to his assist over to Berg.
Atlas LC Beat Whipsnakes LC 12-11
Brendan Curry (Atlas LC) completed an efficient hat trick in the first game of Saturday's slate, striking three times on four total shots, including the game's first three minutes in while scoring two of the three Atlas goals in the third quarter. He contributed three ground balls in the first-ever Atlas win over Whipsnakes.
Defensive midfielder Peter Dearth picked up a ground ball and took one shot in transition to back the Bulls to their first win of the 2023 PLL season.
Drake Porter was on the Atlas LC game day dress roster as a reserve netminder.
Atlas assistant coach Steven Brooks, the team's offensive coordinator, drew up two plays out of late-game timeouts that helped the team topple the two-time PLL champion Whipsnakes for the first time in league history.
Stephen Rehfuss was released to the Player Pool early in the week before he was claimed by Atlas LC. He was not listed on the dress roster for week two.
Tucker Dordevic scored three goals for the Whipsnakes, including a two-point tally in the first quarter. He scored twice in the second quarter, including a power-play strike to put the Whips up 9-7.
Chaos LC Beat Cannons LC 14-13 (OT)
Cannons LC faceoff man Jakob Phaup was listed on the Week Two reserves roster but did not see the field.
Bradley Voigt was not listed on the week two dress rosters for Chaos LC.
Week three of the PLL heads for the midwest as the league takes its talent to Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. Friday action sees the Orange-heavy Atlas take on defending champion Waterdogs at 6 p.m. followed by Cannons and Chrome at 8:30 p.m., both on ESPN+. Saturday leads with Archers vs. Chaos at noon on ESPN followed by Redwoods and Whipsnakes at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
