Following a third-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in school record breaking fashion, Jaheem Hayles has been honored by the ACC as the Track Athlete of the Year.
Hayles earned bronze at the NCAA Championships in a PR time of 13.28, which was the fastest mark in school history, in the 110-meter hurdles. His time bested Freddie Crittenden III's previous SU record of 13.42 seconds.
Hayles was also the bronze medalist at the ACC Championships, but bested both league counterparts in the NCAA final. His time was just 0.04 seconds shy of Arkansas' Phillip Lemonious for gold.
Hayles' strong junior campaign also included a fourth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships and a runner-up finish at the ACC meet in the same event. He garnered USTFCCCA First Team All-America and First Team All-ACC honors in both indoor and outdoor seasons this year.
He becomes the first member of the Orange to win ACC Track Athlete of the Year since Justyn Knight did so in 2018. Hayles' event coach – Associate Head Coach Dave Hegland – has also earned accolades this spring, as he was named USTFCCCA Northeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year last week.
As a team, both the men's and women's programs finished in the top-20 of the USTFCCCA Program of the Year standings. One of just three private schools to score at all six NCAA Championship events between cross country and track, 'Cuse was part of 11 teams in total to accomplish the feat this academic year. Hayles and Amanda Vestri wrapped up the outdoor season earlier this month in Austin by both earning First Team All-America recognition to seal the team finishes.
