It's the home opener on Friday for the No. 8 Syracuse University field hockey team. The squad makes its first official appearance at J.S. Coyne Stadium under first-year head coach Lynn Farquhar after opening the season with a pair of wins over Sacred Heart and Vermont, both in Burlington, Vermont.
From the Start
- It's homeopener time for the No. 8 Syracuse University field hockey team. After a dominant performance away from home, the Orange host Monmouth Friday afternoon at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
- The home slate opener will be carried on ACC Network Extra. Ian Nicholas and Jesse Cook will have the call.
- Syracuse and Monmouth clash for a second-straight year. Last season, the Orange picked up a 3-0 bounce-back win during a weekend trip to New Jersey, also taking on Princeton two days prior to Monmouth.
- Friday kicks off a busy week-ish for the Orange; Syracuse will play four games in a nine-day span, hosting Cornell Wednesday, at Lafayette next Friday, before returning to Coyne for a televised game against UConn next Sunday.
- The Orange popped with a pair of wins in Burlington, Vermont, taking down Sacred Heart 6-1 on Saturday before a 9-1 win over the host Catamounts on Sunday. Two playersÂ
- Pieke van de Pas and Eefke van den Nieuwenhof, contributed eight points apiece, each logging a hat trick in the win.
- Monmouth is coming off a short rest after besting in-state rival Rider 4-1 on Wednesday. Sofia Fouces posted a hat trick in the win as she leads the team with four of the Hawks' five goals this season.
First One Out of The Way
- There's always pressure to collect that first win of the year, especially for a new head coach.
- First-year head coach Lynn Farquhar, who brings eight years of head coaching experience to University Hill, got her first 'Cuse win out of the way, besting Sacred Heart 6-1 last Saturday.Â
- Farquhar is the third coach in program history to open their 'Cuse tenure with a 2-0 record. Kathleen Parker also opened her inaugural campaign with a 2-0 mark while Ange Bradley, with Farquhar as an assistant coach, began her first season (2007) with a 5-0 record.
- The ACC boasts two new head coaches this fall: Farquhar and Erin Matson (UNC). The former opened 2-0 while that later began her tenure at 1-1 through the ACC/B1G Challenge.
Great Eight
- In the win over Vermont, Pieke van de Pas and Eefke van den Nieuwenhof each posted hat tricks, along with two assists each for eight points.
- It marked the first time since Sept. 21, 2008 that two 'Cuse players logged eight points in the same game. Shannon Taylor and Martina Loncarica managed the feat in a win over New Hampshire.
Who's It Going To Be?
- Putting together scouting reports may be a difficult task for 2023 opponents this year.
- Through the first two games of the season, 12 players have logged at least one point, paced by 11 from Pieke van de Pas and nine from Eefke van den Nieuwenhof.
- Olivia Bell tucked away a career-best two goals in the win over Sacred Heart.
- Over the two games, six newcomers contributed points: van de Pas, Aiden Drabick, Sarah Smalley, Hattie Madden, Bo Madden, and Myrthe van Bolhuis.
