Fox Returns to Syracuse

Longtime Syracuse cross country/track and field coach Chris Fox is returning to the Syracuse staff after five years coaching in the professional ranks.
Formerly the Orange's head coach from 2005-18, he led the Syracuse program's resurgence to a national power, alongside current head coach Brien Bell, that transformed 'Cuse into one of the nation's top programs.
"When Coach Griff moved on, we promised the athletes that we would hire the best coach available," Bell said. "I think we did that. We are all excited Coach Fox has come back home."
After retiring from the University in the summer of 2018, Fox is returning to Syracuse as an assistant coach, where he'll work with the cross country and distance programs.
"I am very pleased to be back at Syracuse and to able to assist Coach Bell with his great program," Fox said.
Fox rejoins the program after five years presiding over Reebok Boston Track Club.
Fox's first Syracuse tenure is headlined by the 2015 NCAA Cross Country Championship, multiple individual NCAA Championships and nine team conference titles between cross country and track and field, among other accolades. Fox and Bell inherited a program that hadn't qualified for the NCAA Championships in cross country in the 30 years prior to their arrival. Since they first came to 'Cuse, and under the continued direction of Coach Bell, the Orange men have an active streak of 14-straight appearances. That stretch includes 10 top-15 finishes and three top-five finishes. All-10 of the women's team's NCAA Championship appearances have come under the direction of Bell and Fox as well.
Together, Fox and Bell have coached 31 of Syracuse's 46 All-Americans in the cross country program's history, and have seen Orange athletes earn 79 All-America honors on the track under their direction.
Fox initially arrived at 'Cuse after an four-year stint leading the cross country and distance program at his alma mater, Auburn. He also had coaching stops at North Carolina and George Washington around his professional running career for Nike-Athletics West and Brooks Sports.
Fox is a 1983 graduate of Auburn.
Fox joins Bell's staff that features Associate Head Coach Dave Hegland – who oversees the sprinters and hurdlers, Raynee Revard, who focuses on the women's distance group and Chantel Ray who assists with sprints and hurdles.
