Wagner (0-5) took an early lead on a Rebecca Desiderio goal before the Orange run. Seahawk netminder Sam Black made 11 saves in the contest, including six in the second quarter alone.
How it Happened
- Wagner took the first corner and the first shot of the game in the sixth minute as Shaelyn Kobrynich inserted, setting up Desiderio's goal with Emma Lofstedt on the assist.
- Syracuse put two shots on cage over the final half of the opening quarter but Black was there to give the Seahawks a 1-0 lead after 15 minutes.
- The Orange broke through in the 19th minute as Cato Schreinemacher zipped in a corner insertion straight to Sienna Pegram, setting up van den Nieuwenhof's big blast. Sailing the shot over a sprawling Black, Syracuse pulled back even at 1-1.
- De Vries took command of the scoring with back-to-back goals three minutes apart. On the first, de Vries deked through the seams in the Wagner defense before going back hand, off the near post and in for the lead. Three minutes later and standing right in front of the Wagner goal de Vries collected a rebounded Bo Madden shot, swatting home her second of the day for a 3-1 halftime lead.
- Midway through the third quarter, de Vries converted the natural hat trick after Schreinemacher slid a pass through the Wagner midfielders to de Vries, who charged forward and chipped in her third of the day and a 4-1 'Cuse lead.
- Hattie Madden added an insurance goal late in the third quarter as van den Nieuwenhof blasted a corner shot along the ground with Hattie Madden's stick on the ground for a back-post tip in.
- Syracuse's back line weathered a late storm for the Seahawks, including a defensive save for Schreinemacher, who backed up Abby Neitch after the latter made an initial save on a Desiderio shot. Wagner managed five shots in the fourth quarter, but was stonewalled by two total saves from the Orange.
- De Vries scored her third career hat trick and first since Sept. 11, 2022 against Monmouth. It was her first-ever hat trick at J.S. Coyne Stadium. Her third goal of the day was the 46th of her career, moving her into sole possession of third-place all-time for career goals at Syracuse. Her six points against Wagner vaulted her to 114 career points, which ranks fourth-most at Syracuse.
- Van den Nieuwenhof had her fourth multi-point game of the season while Schreinemacher had a career day with her two assists, the first points of her young Orange career. It was also her first defensive save with Syracuse.
- The Orange split time in goal across each half. Brooke Borzymowski started the game while Neitch backed her up in the second half, a career-high in minutes for the redshirt sophomore.
