SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 4 Syracuse surrendered a game-tying goal in the 89th minute as the Orange played to a 2-2 draw against No. 7 Louisville Friday night in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener.
Â
Gage Guerra scored twice for the Cardinals and opened the scoring at the 10:16 mark before Orange senior Lorenzo Boselli knotted the match at one less than 90 seconds later.
Â
Senior Mateo Leveque helped give 'Cuse the 2-1 advantage in the 33rd minute off a Louisville turnover to take the lead into the break.
Â
The Orange outshot the Cardinals, 19-8, and had more corners (11-6).
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â
Syracuse's offense came out of the gates swinging, outshooting the visitors, 12-2, over the first 45 minutes of action.
Â
Louisville was able to strike first when Guerra sent a shot from the top of the box to the bottom left corner, past the reach of diving Orange goalkeeper, Jason Smith.
Â
A little more than a minute later, sophomore Nicholas Kaloukian drew a foul in the Cardinal box, setting up the penalty kick attempt for Boselli.
Â
Staying composed, the midfielder buried the shot into the right corner of the net, evening the score at one.
Â
Continuing to put pressure on the Louisville offense, 'Cuse took control of a Cardinal turnover as graduate student Noah Singelmann tapped the ball back to senior Jeorgio Kocevski, who passed it off to Leveque in the top of the box, who struck it home for the 2-1 lead.
Â
The score would remain 2-1 for the next 55 minutes before the Cardinals were awarded a corner in the 89th minute.
Â
Sander Roed sent in the corner, where the ball deflected off multiple players in the box, where a waiting Guerra sent the equalizer past Smith.
