No. 12 ’Cuse Goes the Distance with No. 4 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Two lead changes, two ties, and a shootout later, the No. 12 Syracuse University field hockey team fell 3-2 in a shootout at No. 4 Virginia's Turf Field Friday afternoon.
The host Cavaliers took a 2-0 lead in the first four rounds of the shootout, but the Orange rallied back to tie it 2-2 on goals from Bo van Kempen and Berber Bakermans, followed by a clutch poke check from Louise Pert. Syracuse took the lead on its sixth shootout, but the Cavaliers scored two of the game's next three shootouts for the 4-3 final and 3-2 win.
Bakermans scored her first goal for Syracuse (10-4, 4-3 ACC) late in the second quarter in the 27th minute while van Kempen added to her team-leading total with her 12 goal of the year, striking late in the third quarter on a penalty corner at the 40:57 mark. Bakermans and Willemijn Boogert had the assists. Pert made five saves on the day, including four in the third quarter while staring down five Virginia penalty corners.
Virginia (11-2, 5-1 ACC) tied the game twice: once when Emma Watchilla split the defense in the 34th minute and again in the 57th minute on the Cavaliers eighth and final corner of the game. Mia Abello was credited with the deciding goal in the shootout.
Syracuse was out-shot 17-6 on Friday, but scored on two of its three shots on goal. Virginia only put seven shots on goal, five of which Pert thwarted. The Orange tallied one corner goal on three total chances. Syracuse had one in the second overtime period that went just left while another fast-break chance was tipped over the crossbar by a Virginia defender for the only Cavalier stop of the day, a defensive save by Emily Field.
