PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Syracuse men's soccer (5-4-3, 1-2-2 ACC) trips to face the Providence Friars (6-3-2, 1-1-1 BIG EAST) for its second-straight away nonconference match on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. The 7 p.m. contest will be live on FloSports.
The Orange are unbeaten on the road this slate, playing to a 2-0-2 record, including wins at Colgate (Aug. 22) and UAlbany (Oct. 1).
Syracuse can earn three-straight wins for the first time this season if it earns a victory in Rhode Island. The Orange are coming off a two-win week, something they have not done since the first two games of the season when they topped the Raiders in the season opener and Niagara on Aug. 25.
'Cuse Update
A pair of second half goals from Ben Rosenblatt and Gabe Threadgold lifted Syracuse over Notre Dame, 2-1, on Saturday, Oct. 5 at SU Soccer Stadium for the team's first ACC win of the season.
Rosenblatt broke through for the Orange nine minutes into the second half, striking a deflected ball from Threadgold and Michael Acquah into the back of the net for his first score in a Syracuse kit. The Irish did not quit, though, equalizing the match five minutes later. However, it was SU who showed its fight, jumping back in front just a minute and 36 seconds later, as Threadgold squeaked a ball past the goal line to put the Orange back in front. Acquah earned his second assist of the night on the goal.
The Orange have had their goals come in a variety of ways this season, as 13 different players have found the back of the net on SU's 17 total goals this campaign. Threadgold and Daniel Burko lead Syracuse with three goals apiece this season.
Acquah, a junior forward, has been an assist machine this season, collecting five helpers through 12 matches, including two in Syracuse's win over Notre Dame. The Awutu Beretu, Ghana native's five assists is tied with Clemson's Joran Gerbet and Pitt's Guilherme Feitosa for third in the conference.
Scouting the Friars
Providence has had a strong season through its first 11 games of the slate, playing to a 6-3-2 record, including a 1-1-1 mark in BIG EAST play. The Friars have one ranked-victory under their belt this slate, a 1-0 defeat of No. 8 Seton Hall on Sept. 20.
The Friars have earned spots in multiple United Soccer Coaches polls this season, coming in at No. 21 in the most recent rankings released on Oct. 1.
Providence is led by Bruno Rosa with 11 points this season. The junior forward's performances against Brown (Sept. 24) and Creighton (Sept. 28) where he posted a combined-five points (two goals, one assist) landed him a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, the conference announced on Sept. 30.
Series History
Tuesday's match will be the 28th all-time game between the Orange and the Providence Friars in a series that dates to the 1983 season.
SU holds a narrow edge in wins over Providence, 16-11, including a 2-0 victory in the teams' most-recent matchup a season ago.
Prior to the match in 2023, the schools had not faced off since the 2009 campaign, when the Friars topped the Orange in Providence, 1-0.
Up Next
Syracuse will have a week off before its next match against Loyola on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at SU Soccer Stadium for the conclusion of its nonconference slate. The game will begin at 7 p.m. and will be live on ACC Network Extra. Admission and parking are free for all in attendance.
