’Cuse Defeats Providence for Third-Straight Win

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Chimere Omeze provided the game-winning goal in the 71st minute as the Syracuse men's soccer team (6-4-3, 1-2-2 ACC) defeated Providence (6-4-2, 1-1-1 BIG EAST), 2-1, Tuesday night at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. The Orange earned their third-consecutive win for the first time this campaign.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Carlos Zambrano opened the game's scoring in the 15th minute, finding himself at the right place at the right time, tapping a cross from Braedon Smith into the goal. The score was the first of the Miami, Fla. native's season.
Scoring chances were hard to come by for the remainder of the frame, as the Friars and the Orange only took three and one shots, respectively, leading up to the break.
The early minutes of the second half were quiet, with neither team recording a shot until Providence earned a chance in the 58th minute. The Friars then broke through 50 seconds later, finding the back of the net to equalize the match at one goal apiece.
Omeze, who is no stranger to game-winning goals on the road, put the Orange back ahead in the 71st minute. The freshman received a free kick from Elton Chifamba, sending a header to the post, but recovering and striking a rebound into the goal.
The 'Cuse defense faced tough situations for the remainder of the contest as Providence looked to equalize for the second time, but SU held strong, keeping the Friars from scoring as Syracuse went on to earn a 2-1 victory.
OF NOTE:
Syracuse will have a week off before its next match against Loyola on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at SU Soccer Stadium for the conclusion of its nonconference slate. The game will begin at 7 p.m. and will be live on ACC Network Extra. Admission and parking are free for all in attendance.
