Syracuse (1-0) renews its historic series against Colgate (1-1) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the JMA Wireless Dome, as the Orange and Raiders will square off for the 176th time.
Setting The Stage
Syracuse is coming off a narrow 86-82 victory last week against Le Moyne in its season debut. The Orange overcame a five-point halftime deficit and held on late to secure the win.
Colgate enters Tuesday's contest with a 1-1 record this season. The Raiders defeated SUNY Canton in their opener but fell in their most recent outing against Drexel, 73-56. Colgate was tabbed as the favorite in the Patriot League preseason poll, as the Raiders received 14 first-place votes.
The Raiders are led by head coach Matt Langel, who is the winningest coach in program history and has taken Colgate to the NCAA Tournament in five of the past six seasons.
The Syracuse-Colgate Series
The Orange lead the Raiders in the all-time series, 128-47. Colgate has visited the Dome every season since the 1993-94 campaign. Syracuse claimed last season's iteration of the matchup, 79-75, as the Orange rallied to overcome a 24-point second-half deficit to snap a two-game skid in the series.
Double Trouble
Two Syracuse players tallied double-doubles against Le Moyne – Jyare Davis and Donnie Freeman. Davis, the Delaware transfer, led the team in both points (22) and rebounds (12) in his first game with the Orange. He went 7-of-9 from the field and added eight free throws while adding a team-best five offensive rebounds.Â
Freeman's double-double consisted of 10 points and 11 boards. Eight of Freeman's points came in the first half, which included his first career 3-pointer.
Bell Calls Game
Chris Bell poured in 20 points against Le Moyne but his most impactful moment in the game came on the defensive end. After the Orange split a pair of free throws, Le Moyne took over trailing 84-82 with under 20 seconds remaining. With Le Moyne searching for the tying or go-ahead basket, Bell stripped the ball near the top of the key and then drew a foul to earn a trip to the line.
The junior calmly knocked in both foul shots to give Syracuse a two-possession lead with just six seconds left. The free throws secured the eighth 20-point effort of Bell's career and ensured an Orange victory.
Balanced Scoring
Five Syracuse player scored in double figures against Le Moyne. In addition to Davis, Bell and Freeman, J.J. Starling (14) and Eddie Lampkin Jr. (10) both reached the mark. After a quiet first half, Starling roared to life in the second, scoring 10 points. Lampkin Jr. also made a pair of key field goals in the final six minutes of the second half to help Syracuse hold onto its lead against the Dolphins.
Scouting Colgate
Jeff Woodward leads the Raiders in scoring (15.0 ppg) with Nicolas Louis-Jacques (13.5 ppg) also averaging in double figures. Woodward is 14-of-19 from the field in Colgate's first two games and also leads the team in rebounds (14) and assists (9). Sophomore guard Jalen Cox is coming off a 13-point outing against Drexel that also included four steals.
Freeman, Lampkin Jr. Make Preseason Watch Lists
Freeman is one of 20 players to make the preseason watch list for the 2025 Karl Malone Award, which recognizes the top power forwards in Division I men's basketball. Freeman, a McDonald's All-American and the second-highest Syracuse recruit in program history, is one of two freshmen to make this year's Malone Award watch list.Â
Â
Eddie Lampkin Jr. is one of 20 preseason watch-list candidates for the 2025 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award, which goes to the top center in men's college basketball. Lampkin Jr. is in his first year with the Orange following a productive season at Colorado, where he averaged 10.6 points and 7.0 rebounds per contest.
Â
The list for both awards will be narrowed to 10 in late January, and then to just five in late February. In March, the five finalists for both awards will be presented to Abdul-Jabbar, Malone and the Hall of Fame's selection committee where winners will be selected.Â
