From the Start
- The ACC Tournament is here and it's a familiar foe in the first round for the Orange: the Cavaliers of Virginia.
- Syracuse and Virginia meet for a second-straight year in the first round of the ACC Tournament, though this time in a neutral setting. Last season the teams dueled and opened the Tournament in Charlottesville.
- This is the second meeting in less than a month between Syracuse and the Cavaliers, who topped the Orange 3-2 after a 4-3 shootout decision in Charlottesville in Mid-October.
- Syracuse rebounded from that setback and went 2-1 over the final three games of the year, including a 3-1 win over No. 8 UConn on Oct. 27.
- Tuesday's lunchtime showdown will be just the third time Syracuse and Virginia meet in the ACC Tournament. The teams split the first two meetings, a 3-2 Syracuse win in the 2015 Semifinals and a 3-2 Virginia win last year in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Tuesday marks the first time Syracuse and Virginia meet at a neutral site in the ACC Tournament.
- Leah Secondo and Suzanne Bush will have the call for ACC Network, which will carry all seven games of the 2024 ACC FIeld Hockey Championship, hosted at Wake Forest's Kenter Stadium.
Noted Field Hockey Conference, The ACC
- There is little doubt left during the 2024 season that the ACC is THE force in college field hockey as the league is 91-56 overall this fall, including 55-20 in nonconference action, a .733 winning percentage.
- The ACC has the second-best conference win-loss record in Division I, trailing only the Big Ten at 97-56 (.634 overall). The ACC has the best opponent success rate, the best opponent strength of schedule, the best road RPI score, and the best overall RPI.
- This year, the ACC becomes a bicoastal conference as California and Stanford are set to begin play in the league after long stints in the America East Conference and the field hockey specific NorPac.
- The 2024 ACC Championship tournament will be held at Wake Forest University from November 5 until the title clash on Friday, November 8.
The Postseason Measuring Stick
- A statistical measure of a team's successes stacked against its opponents and its opponents' opponents, the Rating Percentage Index (RPI) is a big measuring stick for postseason berths.
- Syracuse currently boasts the 11th-best RPI in Division I at .62353. That strength is backed by an 8-1 nonconference record, playing in the ACC with the best conference RPI in Division I, and taking care of business against teams behind Syracuse in the RPI.
- Since the second RPI standings came out on September 29, Syracuse has steadily progressed up the standings. On September 29, Syracuse had the 17th best RPI before moving up to 12 the following week. After two weeks in the 11 spot, the Orange cracked the top 10 with the ninth-best RPI this week after taking down UConn on the road. After falling 1-0 against No. 9 Boston College, Syracuse slipped back to the 11 spot.
- The Orange have the ninth-best opponent success mark in Division I, the 11th-best opponent strength of schedule (meaning SU foes are also playing quality teams), while the Orange have the 11th-best Road RPI in the country, aided by a 6-3 road record.
