'Cuse Update
Kristjan Fortier and Nathan Scott provided goals as Syracuse upset No. 3 Pittsburgh, 2-0, on Friday, Nov. 1 at SU Soccer Stadium for the program's Senior Night. The victory was the Orange's first ranked win of the season and their highest-ranked triumph since 2022.
Tomas Hut earned his third clean sheet of the season in the victory. The goalkeeper made five saves in the net, his most since Sept. 27 against Wake Forest.
The Orange finished the regular season with a 7-6-3 record, including 2-4-2 in ACC contests. After starting the campaign 3-4-3, 'Cuse played to a 4-2-0 record in the final six contests of the regular season.
ACC Championship History
'Cuse is 8-5-6 all time in the ACC Tournament with a 3-5-1 record in road matches. Syracuse is the No. 12 seed in the conference tournament for the second time since joining the league in 2014. The Orange have also been the No. 2, 5, 6, 7, and 10 seeds.
A season ago, the Orange competed in three ACC Championship matches as they beat NC State, 5-0, and Virginia, 1-1 (4-3 PKs) to earn a semifinal berth. 'Cuse fell in the penultimate round to North Carolina, 3-1.
A first-round win over Wake Forest would send the Orange to the tournament's quarterfinal round for the third-consecutive season.
Scouting the Demon Deacons
Wake Forest finished its regular-season slate with an 8-4-5 record, including a near-unbeaten 6-1-3 mark at home. The Demon Deacons earned four ACC wins over Syracuse (Sept. 24), Boston College (Oct. 5), Virginia Tech (Oct. 19), and NC State (Nov. 1).
The Demon Deacons closed their regular season campaign with a 1-0 ranked win over No. 12 NC State on Friday, Nov. 1. Junior Basit Umar found the back of the net in the 75th minute to provide the difference.
Wake Forest has net 22 goals this season scored by 11 different players. Cooper Flax and Babacar Niang lead the way, earned with four scores apiece.
Series History
Wednesday's contest will be the 13th all-time game between the Orange and the Demon Deacons, with Wake Forest owning a 6-3 edge in series wins. The teams have played to three draws.
The series has not been played in North Carolina since the 2021 campaign, when the Demon Deacons earned a 2-0 victory at home over 'Cuse. Since then, three-consecutive games have been played at SU Soccer Stadium across the 2022-24 seasons.
The postseason contest will be the second time the programs have faced one another this campaign. On Sept. 27 of this season, Wake Forest recorded the first road win of the series when it defeated Syracuse, 2-1, in Central New York. This will be the first time 'Cuse and Wake Forest have ever faced off twice in a season.
Syracuse and Wake Forest have never matched up in the ACC Championship. The Orange have faced off against eight of the 15 ACC programs with men's soccer teams. 'Cuse's most-frequent ACC Championship opponent has been UNC, who it has played five times, followed by four games against Clemson, three against Virginia, two matches against NC State, and one game against Duke, Louisville, Pittsburgh, and Virginia Tech.
Up Next
If the Orange are victorious in Winston-Salem, they would advance to the ACC Championship Quarterfinals against the winner of No. 4 SMU vs. No. 13 Boston College. The match would be played on Sunday, Nov. 10 at either 2, 4, or 6 p.m.
