Syracuse (4-4) is set to host UAlbany (6-4) in a midweek matchup on Tuesday, Dec. 10. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be televised live on ESPN 2.
Setting The Stage
Forwards Donnie Freeman and Jyare Davis both notched 20 points for 'Cuse in a 69-64 loss at Notre Dame on Saturday, Dec. 7. Freeman and Davis combined to shoot 14-of 22Â from the field, with Freeman adding 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. The Fighting Irish prevailed in a back-and-forth second half that featured eight lead changes after intermission. It was the first ACC contest for both teams. Â
UAlbany enters Wednesday's game with a 6-4 record. The Great Danes lost at Boston University, 80-74, in overtime, on Saturday, Dec. 7. The Great Danes are 1-3 on the road this campaign, falling at Army (Nov. 4), Georgetown (Nov. 30), and Boston University (Dec. 7). Their lone road victory came at Dartmouth (Nov. 13).
UAlbany is led by fourth-year head coach Dwayne Killings, who has coached the program to 34 wins across his first three seasons at the helm.
The Syracuse-UAlbany Series
Wednesday's game will be the ninth between the programs in a series that dates back to the 1918-1919 season. The Orange and Great Danes have not faced off in over a decade. The most recent encounter came during the 2011-12 campaign.Â
Syracuse has won all eight pairings against UAlbany.
Double-Double Donnie
Orange freshman Donnie Freeman secured his fourth double-double of the season in the team's loss at Notre Dame on Saturday. The Washington, D.C. native had his second 20-plus point outing of the campaign, while also grabbing 11 boards in the contest.
Freeman leads Syracuse with four double-doubles on the season and is averaging a team-high 8.8 rebounds per game.
Dangerous Davis
Jyare Davis is coming off his second 20-point performance of the season in the team's loss to the Fighting Irish. He had an impressive Orange debut, scoring 221 points off the bench when Syracuse defeated Le Moyne in the season opener.
The Newark, Delaware native gave Syracuse a boost on Saturday, scoring seven-consecutive points to keep the Orange in the contest early, before going on to finish tied for the squad honors with 20 points.
Controlling The Glass
As a team, Syracuse averages 39.4 rebounds per game, which ranks No. 3 in the ACC behind SMU (43.4) and Duke (39.8). The Orange have grabbed 40 or more boards in four of their eight games this season, including a high of 50 in the double overtime winagainst Youngstown State (Dec. 16).
In addition to Freeman's board effort, Eddie Lampkin Jr. has also been effective on the glass, averaging 6.6 rebounds per game.
Scouting the Great Danes
The Great Danes welcomed a combined 10 freshmen and transfers this past offseason, while also bringing back six returners from the 2023-24 season. Graduate student Byron Joshua is their leading scorer, averaging 13.6 points per game.
Justin Neely (11.7), Amar'e Marshall (11.3), and DeMarr Langford Jr. (10.6) are all also averaging in double figures for UAlbany.
As a team, UAlbany averages 77.2 points per game and has outscored its competition by a small margin of 5.4 points per outing. The Great Danes also average 31.4 rebounds per game, along with 12.3 team assists per contest.
Freeman, Lampkin Jr. Make Preseason Watch Lists
Freeman is one of 20 players to make the preseason watch list for the 2025 Karl Malone Award, which recognizes the top power forwards in Division I men's basketball. Freeman, a McDonald's All-American and the second-highest Syracuse recruit in program history, is one of two freshmen to make this year's Malone Award watch list.Â
Lampkin Jr. is one of 20 preseason watch-list candidates for the 2025 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award, which goes to the top center in men's college basketball. Lampkin Jr. is in his first year with the Orange and is averaging 10.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per contest.
The list for both awards will be narrowed to 10 in late January, and then to just five in late February. In March, the five finalists for both awards will be presented to Abdul-Jabbar, Malone and the Hall of Fame's selection committee where winners will be selected.Â
