Syracuse celebrated 12 seniors and graduate students on Saturday afternoon at Tennity Ice Pavilion following its last game of the season against Mercyurst. The Class of 2024 contributed 137 points and 107 saves on the ice this season. The Class of 2024 includes sixth-year and alternate captain Marielle McHale, graduate students Kate Holmes, Kailey Langefels, Darci Johal, Rachel Teslak, Haley Uliasz and Alexandria Weiss, and fourth-year seniors Kambel Beacom, alternate captain Rayla Clemons, Sarah Thompson, Amelia Van Vliet and captain Tatum White.
Â
"This entire group of 12 has done so much as a group and as individuals in their own ways. Watching the videos and hearing them speak about their time at Syracuse, for some it was one year and for others it was four or six, is emotional," said head coach Britni Smith. "Seeing the emotion on their faces is an extremely positive thing to know they have enjoyed their experience, but it is always hard to see those athletes move on to the next stage."
Â
After Mercyhurst forward Kylee Mahoney opened the scoring with a goal 4:13 into the game, Orange (7-23-3 overall, 4-13-2 College Hockey America) sophomore Maya D'Arcy tied the game on assists from Jocelyn Fiala and Darci Johal. D'Arcy tied the game firing a shot from the blue line into the back of the net. Mercyhurst (17-15-1, 13-6) regained the lead, 2-1, on a goal by Vanessa Upson with 5:43 remaining in the second. The Lakers added two third period goals for the 4-1 final score. Van Vliet recorded a career-high 42 saves in net for the Orange.
Â
"We are not happy with our record this year but feel like we have made huge strides," Smith said. "We have the right people in the locker room, a culture that we are really proud of, and we have people who are active members of the community who are great student-athletes who really want to be part of what we are building. The biggest takeaway is all of the little things we have worked so hard on that from the outside looking in you might not see, but we see every day and it makes coming to the rink really fun."
