
#7 Orange Upset #2 Fighting Irish

SOUTH BEND, Indiana – No. 7 Syracuse used a third quarter comeback to upset No. 2 Notre Dame, 16-14, in South Bend, Indiana on Saturday. The win is the Orange's first against a top-five team this season and evens their record at 2-2.

Senior Natalie Smith and junior Olivia Adamson scored four goals each to pace the 'Cuse offense. Adamson also dished out two assists to tie her season high with six points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Notre Dame (4-1) led by one at the end of the first quarter and extended its advantage to 10-6 at halftime.

Syracuse started its comeback in the third quarter. Adamson and Smith scored back-to-back goals after halftime, helping the Orange outscore the Fighting Irish 6-1 in the third quarter. Trailing 11-9, Smith scored the first of four-straight goals for Syracuse and Meghan Rode's second of the day gave the Orange a 12-11 advantage heading to the fourth quarter.

The Fighting Irish scored first to start the final period, tying the score at 12-12. Emma Muchnick converted on a free position attempt, giving Syracuse the lead for good and sparking the Orange on a 3-0 scoring run.

Maddy Baxter followed Muchnick's goal and Emma Tyrrell found the back of the net to give the Orange a 15-12 advantage with 10 minutes remaining.

The squads traded goals before a 'Cuse yellow card at 2:33 gave Notre Dame a woman advantage for two minutes. Abby Maichin scored with 1:03 on the clock, but Kate Mashewske won the ensuing draw and the Orange ran out the clock for the victory in the ACC opener for both teams.
