
Georgia Tech Nips Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After defeating #32 Clemson just days before, the Syracuse women's tennis team (7-2, 2-1 ACC) battled against #31 Georgia Tech (6-4, 2-0), but was nipped, 4-3, in Drumlin's Country Club on Sunday afternoon.

A close battle in the doubles event resulted in a point for the Yellow Jackets. The duo of Emilie Elde and Viktoriya Kanapatskaya were first to finish up in the doubles event, dropping their match in the number three spot to Kylie Bilchev and Alejandra Cruz, 6-3. The Orange returned as the pair of Miyuka Kimoto and Shiori Ito defeated Scarlett Nicholson and Given Roach in the number two spot, 7-3.

The doubles point came down to the number one match, Polina Kozyreva and Ines Fonte versus Carol Lee and Kate Sharabura. Down 4-5, Fonte and Kozyreva battled to with the 10th game and even the score at 5-5. Each following game was close, but the Georgia Tech pair finished with a 7-5 victory and claimed the doubles point.

The first point in the singles event was taken by Georgia Tech after Lee bested Elde in the number one spot, 6-2, 6-2. Kimoto grabbed the first point of the day for the Orange by taking down Bilchev, 6-2, 6-3, in the number two spot. Anastasia Sysoeva battled with Sharabura in the number six spot but ultimately lost, 7-5, 6-4.

Kanapatskaya secured the second point for the Orange by outlasting Cruz in the number three spot, 6-3, 6-4. Georgia Tech claimed its fourth point and earned the win as Nicholson defeated Kozyreva in a match that went the distance, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Ito finished out her match and stood victorious in the number five spot against Mahak Jain, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

The Orange are set to travel south next weekend to face Duke on Friday, March 1 at 6 p.m., followed by North Carolina on Sunday, March 3 at 11 a.m.
