SYRACUSE N.Y. – The No. 9/No. 9 Syracuse men's lacrosse team toppled No. 20 Colgate, 18-10, to improve to 2-0 for the second consecutive year.
Joey Spallina had three goals before halftime and conducted the offense, leading the team with a total of four goals and five assists in the contest. His nine points tied a career high. Owen Hiltz (3g, 3a) and Michael Leo (3g, 1a) each produced a hat trick. Finn Thompson (2g, 1a), Christian Mulé (1g, 2a) and Mason Kohn (1g, 2a) each added multi-point days.
In addition to his first goal of the season, Kohn controlled the faceoffs. He got possession of 17 of the 22 faceoffs he took for the Orange. John Mullen won seven of the nine faceoffs he took. Syracuse finished with a 24-7 advantage at the faceoff spot.
Syracuse held control when the ball hit the turf, grabbing 58 ground balls to Colgate's 27.
There were 19 committed penalties between the two squads, totaling 17 minutes with players in the box. Colgate had 11 penalties for a total of 11:30 and Syracuse logged eight penalties for 5:30.

How It Happened
- Syracuse opened the contest on a roll, scoring the first five goals of the game in the first 5:16 of play. Five different Orange tallied the goals: Hiltz, Spallina, Leo, Jake Stevens and Carter Rice.
- Neither team scored until Colgate netted its first with 5:08 left in the first quarter.
- The first quarter ended with the Orange ahead, 9-2. Finn Thompson and Spallina netted one each in the final five minutes of the quarter and the Raiders' Liam Connor got the last of the period with :49 on the clock.
- Colgate's Rory Connor and Jack Turner scored the next two to start the second frame. Spallina got his third of the affair before the Raiders notched two more, cutting their deficit to two, 8-6.
- Saam Olexo racked his first goal of the season on a man-up opportunity with 34 seconds left before halftime. The squads went into the intermission with a Syracuse advantage, 9-6.
- The Orange netted the first three goals after halftime. Hiltz had a part in all three, scoring two and assisting one to Tucker Kellogg.
- Rory Connor logged his third goal of the game and seventh for Colgate with 6:45 to go in the third quarter. Mulé responded 11 seconds later with a goal off a dish from Kohn.
- After Leo logged his third goal of the season, Colgate got another from Turner. The Orange closed out the third period with an extra-man goal from Spallina and scores from Thompson and Kohn in the final minute of the quarter.
- Three shots went into the net in the fourth quarter, two from Colgate and one from Syracuse's Leo. The Orange controlled possession to end it and emerged victorious, 18-10.
- The Orange won their 50th game in the all-time series against Colgate.
- Syracuse improves to 66-22 against nonconference opponents.
