SYRACUSE N.Y. – The No. 9/No. 9 Syracuse men's lacrosse team won all three contests in a packed opening week, beating Manhattan, 16-3, Friday night in the JMA Wireless Dome.
Joey Spallina had a career-high 10 points on seven assists and three goals. Owen Hiltz tallied six points with three goals and three assists. Jake Stevens (2g) and Mason Kohn (1g, 1a) each had multi point days for the Orange.
Nine Syracuse performers logged one point in the contest: Christian Mulé (1g), Michael Leo (1g), Sam English (1g), Luke Rhoa (1g), Tyler Cordes (1g), Greg Elijah-Brown (1g), Saam Olexo (1g), Tucker Kellogg (1a) and Blake Erlbeck (1a).
The stout Orange defense held the Jaspers to just three goals. The last time Syracuse held an opposing offense to three goals was a win against Albany, 15-3, on Feb. 16, 2019. The home team held Manhattan without a goal for a 23:37 span to end the game.
Syracuse got possession of 19 of 23 faceoffs in the affair. Kohn succeeded on 14 of his 15 attempts and John Mullen won four of the five he took.

How It Happened
- The Orange scored the first three goals of the contest 1:30 of the game. Kohn began the contest by winning the faceoff and taking it to the cage, resulting in a 1-0 advantage for Syracuse 14 seconds in.
- Scott O'Connor netted the first goal for the Jaspers at the 12:13 mark to make the score 3-1 in favor of the Orange.
- Syracuse converted four more goals before the end of the first quarter, which brought the score to 7-1. Spallina and Hiltz each contributed three assists in the first 15 minutes.
- Hiltz got the first goal of the second quarter from a Spallina feed with 8:49 to go in the period. The Orange scored two more before Manhattan got its second of the game with 56 seconds before halftime.
- Hiltz connected with Spallina with six seconds left in the period. After the goal, Kohn quickly won the clamp, fed it to Spallina, and he slotted it in with one second on the clock. The squads went into the intermission with a 12-2 Syracuse advantage.
- Manhattan's O'Connor got his third goal of the game with 8:37 to go in the third quarter. The Orange netted two more before the end of the third period.
- The final 15 minutes saw just two goals total, both from Syracuse. Elijah-Brown and Cordes each scored their first goals of the season.
- Syracuse won its 75th game in which its opponent was held under 10 goals.
- The Orange scored eight times on the possession directly following a faceoff win. Syracuse has 23 total goals this season that fall in the category.
