Orange Defeated at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Syracuse women's tennis team was defeated at Virginia Tech (8-7, 3-4 ACC), 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

In the doubles event, the Syracuse (9-7, 3-6) pairing of Emilie Elde and Anastasia Sysoeva were beaten by Charlotte Cartledge and Ozlem Uslu in the number three spot, 6-2. The Hokies claimed the doubles point after the duo of Shiori Ito and Viktoriya Kanapatskaya lost to Semra Aksu and Erika Cheng in the number two spot, 6-3. Miyuka Kimoto and Polina Kozyreva led in the number one spot, 5-4, against Katie Andreini and Dariya Radulova before the match was abandoned.

The first point of the singles event was taken by Virginia Tech as Tamara Barad Itzhaki took down Kozyreva in the number four spot, 6-2, 6-1. Sysoeva claimed the lone point of the match for the Orange as she defeated Laima Frosch, 7-5, 6-2, in the number five spot.

Kanapatskaya was next to finish up in the number three spot as Aksu won the match, 6-4, 6-2. The Hokies claimed the match winning point when Andreini defeated Elde in the number two spot, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4). Ito battled against Cheng in the number six spot, but nipped by her opponent as Cheng claimed a 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 10-8 victory. Kimoto wrapped up the competition with a loss in a match that went the distance. Uslu outlasted Kimoto in the number one spot, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.

The Orange are set for their second consecutive weekend on the road when they face Florida State on Friday, March 29 at 4:30 p.m. before traveling to No. 19 Miami on Sunday, March 31 at noon. Live video and results will be available for both matches.
