Sam Lawler became the first member of the Orange to punch his ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, on night one of the NCAA East Preliminary Round.
Lawler took 11th in the 10,000-meter run semifinal, earning one of the 12 spots in Eugene, Oregon at the event next month. He finished with a time of 29:22.34, cementing his spot to advance. Paul O'Donnell was 17th in 29:35.60.
Two other members of the men's squad advanced to the next qualifying round. Jaheem Hayles (110-meter hurdles) and Benne Anderson (1,500-meter run), both moved to Friday's NCAA Quarterfinal round. The fields in each of their respective events was cut from 48 to 24, with 12 runners based on Friday's results getting through to the NCAA Championships.
Anderson earned an automatic spot to advance by virtue of taking third in his heat. His time of 3:43.20 was the 10th fastest overall on the day.
Hayles drew by far the fastest heat of the 110-meter hurdles, but still managed to advance based on time. Six of the 24 runners to advance came from the first-of-six heats, which included Hayles. His time of 13.88 seconds was fifth in his heat, but was the 17th-best mark overall on the day. He'll look to advance to his fifth-straight NCAA Championship event (third-straight outdoors).
Two other men were unable to finish their race, drawing their season to a close. Elijah Mallard fell after clipping a hurdle in the 400-meter hurdles, and Perry Mackinnon did not finish in the men's 10k.
The women will get their racing started on Thursday. Shaleah Colaire (100/400-meter hurdles) and Savannah Roark (10,000-meters) will be the next on the track. Hayles and Anderson will race again on Friday, and the meet will close on Saturday with Madison Neuner (3,000-meter steeplechase), Ellie Lawler (5,000-meter run) and Colaire should she qualify in one or both of her events.
