Savannah Roark became the second member of the Orange to punch their ticket to the NCAA Championships on Thursday, advancing in the women's 10,000-meter run.
Roark will join Sam Lawler, who accomplished the feat on the men's side in Wednesday's action during the NCAA East Preliminary Round. The Orange have consistently qualified runners to the sport's final weekend in the 10k, with 'Cuse being represented in at least one of the 10k finals in 12 of the last 14 seasons in which a championship was held.
Roark crossed the line in 33:13.06, earning one of the 12 qualifying spots, doing so after waiting out a nearly five hour weather delay from the initial scheduled start time for the race.
A 13-runner lead pack broke off from the field with six laps remaining, with Roark boxed in at the rail and unable to answer the move. She climbed her way back into contention leading the chase pack and eventually ran down both Tennesse's Emily Covert and Penn's Maeve Stiles in the final lap to secure the 12th and final qualifying spot to Eugene.
Also in Thursday's racing, Shaleah Colaire set a new PR in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.54 seconds, but fell 0.11 seconds out of qualifying. She later turned in a time of 1:00.26 in the 400-meter hurdles as well
Action continues on Friday, with Jaheem Hayles (110-meter hurdles) and Benne Anderson (1,500-meter run), followed by Madison Neuner (3,000-meter steeplechase) and Ellie Lawler (5,000-meters) on Saturday, all in quarterfinal action with berths to the NCAA Championship on the line.
