Syracuse (28-23) pitchers limited Boston College (31-23) to one run and four hits but the Orange were unable to cross the plate and the Eagles emerged, 1-0, in the first game of the ACC Tournament at Duke Softball Stadium in Durham, N.C.
Boston College's Abby Dunning held the Orange to two hits and struck out four in a complete-game effort that improved her season mound mark to 14-13.
Lindsay Hendrix, an All-ACC Third Team honoree, gave up just four hits and one run in 5.1 innings of work for Syracuse. Jessie DiPasquale came on in relief and retired all five batters she faced.
HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED
Boston College broke open a scoreless game in the top of the fourth inning. Catcher Hannah Slike doubled to start off the frame and third baseman Nicole Giery followed with a two-base hit to drive in the only run.Â
Hendrix limited the damage by striking out shortstop Gator Robinson and inducing a fly ball from designated player Jordan Stephens. After walking right fielder Jules Shields. who then stole second base, Hendrix retired second baseman Emma Jackson on a ground out to third.
ORANGE EARLY THREATS
Syracuse had base runners in each of the first three innings. Center fielder Angel Jasso reached on catcher's interference and advanced to second on a passed ball but got no further in the first inning. In the second frame, Pinch-hitter Makenzie Foster walked before being caught attempting to steal second. Third baseman Rebecca Clyde was hit by a pitch in the third but remained stuck on first.
BREAKING UP THE NO-NO
With two outs in the fifth, Olivia Pess singled to the right side for Syracuse's first hit. Dunning responded by striking out Clyde to end the inning.
The Orange challenged again in the sixth and had pinch-runner Vanessa Flores and Jasso on first and second respectively, with one out. Dunning rose to the occasion again by getting first baseman Madison Knight to pop out to second and catcher Laila Morales-Alves to line out to second.
ONE LAST CHANCE
Kelly Breen kept Syracuse's hopes alive in the seventh inning with a one-out single to center. Gabby Lantier entered the game as a pinch runner but Press struck out and Clyde grounded out to third to end the contest.
