
Fall Jersey Retirements Announced

Two new banners will be hung in Syracuse Athletics venues this fall, celebrating the accomplishments of outstanding former Orange stars.
Dwight Freeney (football) and Cheree Hicks (track and field) are part of this year's jersey retirement class, and will both have their respective ceremonies held in September.
DWIGHT FREENEY
The first celebration this year, Freeney will be honored during the Georgia Tech game on Sept. 7. He was previously announced as part of this year's jersey retirement class during his College Football Hall of Fame celebration last season.
A member of the College and Pro Football Hall of Fame, Freeney finished his career ranked second in program history with 34 sacks and was third in BIG EAST history. He posted over 50 tackles for loss in hie career and was an All-American in 2001 after setting the program's single-season sacks record (17.5), earning BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year.
He later went on to be drafted 11th overall by the Indianapolis Colts, where he totaled the 18th-most sacks in NFL history during his 16-year career. He was enshrined in Canton earlier this month, giving Syracuse the seventh-most Pro Football Hall of Fame honorees of any school.
CHEREE HICKS
Hicks was a six-time All-American thrower in her time at Syracuse and won six BIG EAST individual championships. She claimed conference titles in the indoor shot put (twice), outdoor shot put (twice) and discus in her time on the hill. She was a three-time NCAA silver medalist in 2000, finishing runner-up in the shot put (both indoor and outdoor) and discus in 2000.
She later went on to the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in 2000, where she placed fifth. Hicks still holds the indoor and outdoor shot put and discus records at 'Cuse.
Hicks' celebration will be at the John A. Lally Athletics Complex on Friday, Sept. 20. That afternoon, there will be an unveiling of her banner in the arena of the Lally Athletics Complex beginning at 4 p.m., before she is later honored during a timeout at the Orange's football game vs. Stanford that evening.
