LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – With eight different goal scorers finding the back of the net for the 10th-ranked Syracuse University field hockey team, the Orange rolled past host Lock Haven University 9-0 in the 2024 season opener.
Bo van Kempen was the lone player with multiple goals as she converted midway through the first quarter and then early in the second on a penalty stroke. Olivia Bell, Willemijn Boogert, Sarah Smalley, Pati Strunk, and Taja Gans all scored. Boogert also led the Orange with four points behind her goal and pair of assists.
Syracuse (1-0) split time in net between Louise Pert, who returns after missing 2023 to an injury, and freshman Vera Hekkenberg. Neither goalie was challenged in their respective 30 minutes, with Pert and the defense handling the lone Lock Haven (0-1) penalty corner.

How it Happened
- Van Kempen made herself known early on the penalty corner unit as she wristed home the first goal of the 2024 season, getting the stick stop from Annabelle Vossenaar and the insert from Willemijn Boogert at the 7:46 mark of the first.
- After being held to just one goal in the first period, Syracuse showed why it was one of the nation's top offensive teams last season and put away four goals in the second frame.
- Van Kempen converted a penalty shot two and a half minutes into the third before the Orange tucked away three goals in the final 10 minutes of the period.
- Bell pushed home a one-timer on a feed from van Asselen, followed by a breakaway goal from Boogert with less than five to play in the half.
- In the right place at the right time, Smalley collected a rebounded shot and fired home her first of the year with just over two minutes to go in the half.
- Coming into the third quarter, Strunk got a pass from Lana Hamilton deep inside Lock Haven's defensive third before coolly putting up the sixth Orange goal of the day. Two minutes later, rookie Taja Gans finished another Syracuse corner chance with the same battery of Vossenaar and Boogert, capping the third with a 7-0 Syracuse advantage.
- Brown had a hand in each of the final two Syracuse goals as she deflected a Hattie Madden chance with six minutes to play. After another two minutes, Rowan fed Drabick inside on a counter attack for the ninth and final goal of the day.
- Syracuse out-shot the Bald Eagles 19-13, including 13 'Cuse shots on goal.
- The Orange earned eight penalty corners while only surrendering one to Lock Haven early in the first quarter.
- Syracuse piled up 26 points between nine goals and eight assists. It marks the highest point total in a season opener for the Orange since joining the ACC (2013).
- Friday's win at Charlotte E. Smith Field was the first Syracuse win at Lock Haven in series history, avenging the previous two setbacks in 1986 and 1987. The Orange have bested Lock Haven in the last two meetings, including a 3-2 win in Syracuse in 1988.
- The Orange continue their stay in Central Pennsylvania as they take an early Top 20 test on Sunday.
- No. 10 Syracuse takes on No. 16 Penn State (0-1) Sunday afternoon at the Nittany Lions' Field Hockey Complex. Game time is set for noon on BTN+.
- Syracuse looks to keep the momentum rolling against Penn State as the Orange have won the last five meetings, including a 2-1 victory in the rain last fall in Happy Valley.
