1/12/2025 8:17:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Kyra Wood provided an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double off the bench to lead the Syracuse women's basketball team (7-9, 1-4 ACC) over Miami (11-5, 1-4 ACC) for their first ACC win of the season on Sunday at the JMA Wireless Dome.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both offenses were slow to get going early, with the Orange holding a 6-5 edge five minutes into play, but things picked up from there, as Syracuse took a 17-12 advantage into the second period. 'Cuse outscored the Hurricanes again in the second quarter, 14-11, helping itself to a 31-23 lead at the half.
The third quarter saw the score tighten up, with the Hurricanes closing the deficit to just two points with 3:46 to play in the frame. The narrow 'Cuse edge would not last long, as a Wood jumper sparked an 11-2 stretch to end the quarter with the Orange taking a 12-point lead into the final 10 minutes of play.
Despite being outscored, 23-16, in the final quarter, the Orange were timely with their scoring en route to their victory. With just over two minutes to play, Sophie Burrows provided a huge three, extending the Syracuse lead to seven after a Miami three closed the gap to four. The Hurricanes then added a free throw, but Wood came up big yet again for the Orange, netting a layup that sent her team up eight with 50.1 to play. Miami made a late push in the final minute of the game, but Georgia Woolley knocked down five free throws to seal the 66-61 Syracuse victory.
WELCOME BACK, KYRA
Wood made an immediate impact in her return to the court after a two-game hiatus, leading the 'Cuse with an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double in just 20 minutes off the bench. The double-double was her fourth of the season and second in three outings, as she recorded 11 points and 11 boards in the team's win over Dartmouth.
In her role off the bench, Wood led a Syracuse non-starting unit to outscore Miami's reserves, 34-26.
