
Syracuse Holds Early Lead But Falls to Cornell

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse University women's ice hockey dropped a tightly contested matchup against Cornell 6-3 on Tuesday night at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
Syracuse (7-17-0) led through the first period, 2-0. Bryn Saarela put the Orange on the board first, with help from Sami Gendron. Sophomore forward Jackson Kinsler potted a goal, with assists from Gendron and Charli Kettyle. Jocelyn Fiala added another goal late in the third period, assisted by Nea Tervonen. Goalkeeper Allie Kelley recorded 46 saves on the night.
Cornell (12-4-3) responded with two goals in the second period by Gabbie Rud and Karel Prefoinatine. Four other Cornell players scored in the third period, including Lindzi Avar, Delaney Fleming, Grace Dwyer, and Kaitlin Jockims. The Big Red split goaltending duties during the night. Bergmann Annelies played for 39 minutes and stopped 9 shots. Jeanne Lortie played the remaining 20 minutes and tallied two saves.
How it Happened
- Syracuse's Saarela lit the lamp with a power-play goal at the 8:56 mark in the first period, assisted by Gendron.
- Towards the end of the first period, Kinsler ripped the puck between the pipes to increase the Orange lead 2-0. Gendron and Kettyle provided the assists.
- At the 5:37 mark in the second period, Cornell responded with a goal by Rud assisted by Adam Avi and Dwyer to cut the deficit 2-1.
- Four minutes later, Prefontaine slipped a shot in the net to knot the game 2-2 with help from Alyssa Regalado.
- Early in the third period, the Big Red took advantage of a power play as Avar scored the go-ahead goal, with assists from Avi and Prefontaine, extending the lead 3-2.
- Less than a minute later, Fleming found the net with help from Lily Delianedis to widen the margin 4-2.
- At the 10:43 mark of the final frame Dwyer off a cross-pass from Piper Grober, boosting the score 5-2.
- The Orange rallied back late in the third period at 18:24 when Fiala buried the puck in the net, fed by Tervonen, cutting the lead to 5-3.
- With less than three seconds remaining in the third period, Jockims scored an unassisted empty-net insurance goal, to seal the 6-3 win for Cornell.
"I thought we had a lot of positives. Tonight our special teams were the highlight of our game. I didn't feel like that was the case last weekend but tonight they turned that around. Now we will be focusing on pushing forward this weekend."
Behind the Numbers
- Syracuse out-blocked the Big Red 16-5. Jessica Cheung led the effort with four blocks for the Orange. Jackson Kinsler reached a new season high with three blocks.
- Kinsler scored her fifth goal this season.

- Gendron achieved a season-best performance, tallying two assists.
