Orange Fall Short in Battle at Florida State

Sophie Burrows posted her first-career double-double with 14 points and a personal-best 10 rebounds, but the Syracuse women's basketball team (6-8, 0-3 ACC) lost a tough battle to Florida State (13-2, 3-0 ACC), 85-73, on Sunday at Donald Tucker Center in Tallahassee, Florida.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Orange jumped out to an early 9-4 lead, but Florida State responded with a 12-0 run to take control. The Seminoles maintained their advantage for the rest of the opening quarter, finishing the frame with a 21-15 lead.
The Orange sparked a 9-0 run midway through the second quarter to grab a one-point lead at the 5:30 mark. Madeline Potts fueled the surge with back-to-back three-pointers, helping Syracuse claim the advantage. 'Cuse maintained its momentum, outscoring Florida State 9-7 over the remainder of the quarter to take a 35-32 lead into halftime.
The teams traded leads early in the third quarter, but Florida State closed the frame on an 11-4 run to take an eight-point lead into the fourth.
Syracuse made a strong push in the final 10 minutes, cutting the deficit to as few as five points with a 9-0 run. However, Florida State held off the late charge, securing an 85-73 victory.
BURROWS SPARKS FOURTH QUARTER
In a performance that marked the first double-double of her career, Burrows caught fire late in the game, scoring 10 of her 14 total points in the final 10 minutes to fuel the Orange's comeback attempt. During this stretch, the sophomore shot 4-of-5 (80 percent) from the field.
The Victoria, Australia native posted a career-best rebounding performance against the Seminoles, pulling down 10 rebounds, surpassing her previous high of eight. Nine of her 10 boards came on the defensive end.
ASSISTING ANGELICA
Angelica Velez turned in a career-best performance in the passing game, recording 10 assists off the bench, setting a new personal best. The guard now has 39 assists on the season, the third-most on the team.
Velez's 10-assist performance makes her the second member of the Orange to reach that mark this season, joining Dominique Camp, who recorded 10 assists on Dec. 21 in a win over Dartmouth.
BENCH BRINGS THE HEAT
The Orange's non-starters had another strong outing in the loss, led by Journey Thompson and Potts, who scored 13 and 11 points, respectively. The bench contributed 28 total points, outscoring Florida State's non-starting unit by seven.
The bench's performance was highlighted by its strong second-quarter effort, helping Syracuse regain the lead. The non-starters scored 15 of the team's 20 points in the period, giving the Orange a three-point advantage heading into halftime.

The Orange return to the JMA Wireless Dome for their first home game of the new year on Thursday, Jan. 9 for the program's School Day contest. Tipoff is slated for 10:30 a.m. on ACC Network Extra.

- Georgia Woolley provided her 11th double digit scoring outing of the campaign, finishing the contest with 12 points, including a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line.
- Saniaa Wilson made her first start of the season and 10th of her career against FSU. The forward added eight points and six rebounds in the game.
- Despite playing without the team's leading rebounder in Kyra Wood, 'Cuse outrebounded the Seminoles, 44-43, in the loss.
- The 'Cuse defense limited a Florida State offense that averages 95.6 points per game to just 85 points on the afternoon, 10 points below the Seminoles' average.
- The loss moves Syracuse to 6-8 on the season.
- The Orange are now 6-8 in the all-time series against the Seminoles
