Orange Edged By Boston College

A penalty-kick goal 32 minutes into the contest was the only scoring in a tightly-contested ACC match that Boston College (5-6-5, 1-5-2) won at Syracuse (4-7-4, 1-6-1) on Sunday.
HOW THE MATCH WAS DECIDED
In a foul that was determined by video review, Syracuse was saddled with a hand-ball charge at 32:02 of the first half. Boston College sophomore Amalie Dray took the try and found the corner of the goal, just beyond the outstretched hands of Syracuse senior goalkeeper Shea Vanderbosch. Dray's third goal of the fall ended up being the only tally of the afternoon.
ORANGE OPPORTUNITIES
Senior Mia Klammer, Syracuse's top scorer on the season, had some of the team's best scoring chances. Her first came at 18:39 into the match, after sophomore Gabby Wisbeck carried deep and then crossed the ball into the box. Klammer played the ball on the bounce and connected, but the attempt went just left and outside of the post. Six minutes later, sophomore Anna Croyle's shot suffered a similar fate. She received a lead pass from graduate student Ashley Rauch, turned toward the net and struck, only to miss in a similar spot.Â
The Orange had one more golden opportunity in the final minute of the first half. The play began as a Syracuse corner kick. Boston College attempted to clear but freshman Liv Bozzo settled the ball and passed back to freshman Julia Arbelaez. She found an open Jasmine Nixon, a sophomore, to her right, and Nixon's shot was deflected off line by Boston College goalkeeper Olivia Shippee with two seconds left.
SU senior Anna Rupert had her club's only on-target attempt in the second half, with three and a half minutes remaining. Shippee made the save, her second of the contest.
SHEA STOPS
Outside of the challenging penalty kick, Vanderbosch had another stellar outing guarding the Orange goal. The program's all-time leader in saves, Vanderbosch ended up with four stops, three of which came in the first 45 minutes.
Vanderbosch made her initial save at 17:48, when she gathered in a long shot from sophomore Ashley Roberts. Freshman Emily Mara earned an open look at 27:56 but Vanderbosch was equal to the task. Freshman Sadie Mathis took advantage of a Syracuse turnover three minutes later and broke in on the Orange goal. Vanderbosch stymied her Eagle counterpart by diving to her left and securing the ball.
Boston College's only shot on cage after the intermission was constructed on junior Elly Slensky's lead pass to Roberts, who tested Vanderbosch at 65:07.
SPECIAL PREGAME
The pre-match activities were highlighted by the singing of the national anthem by Jordan Lauher, the sister of Syracuse graduate student Kendyl Lauher.
