UNCASVILLE, CONN,- The Syracuse women's basketball team (5-0) defeated Utah (3-2) in the first game of the Hall of Fame Classic 61-49. Dominique Darius' double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds helped put the Orange past the Utes in its first road game of the season.Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
Laila Phelia started off the game by putting up a three-pointer from the corner after Syracuse won the tipoff. Sophie Burrows followed in the next drive to put one up herself. In the last drive, SU was able to retain four offensive rebounds, testing the Utes' defense. On the first quarter alone, the Orange had already collected 16 rebounds, four blocks and two steals to tie Utah 12-12.Â
Utah climbed up to take a 25-21 lead to close out the first half. Phelia contributed four points in the second quarter to give her double digits in the points column. The Orange shot from a further range in this half as only two points were scored in the paint before Syracuse entered the locker room.Â
Uche Izoje helped turn the momentum around as the Orange battled back and forth with the Utes. Izoje collected five points, including an and-one maneuver. Syracuse retook the lead after Darius nailed in a three from beyond the arc. Phelia found her spot again in the corner to add another three-point field goal as Syracuse held a 42-39 lead going into the final quarter.Â
Burrows found Journey Thompson through Utah defenders in the paint early in the fourth quarter to begin Syracuse's scoring streak. Darius put down another three just minutes later to increase the score to the largest lead of the game and force Utah to call a timeout. A steady Syracuse offense in the final minutes of the game gave the Orange the 61-49 win to improve to 5-0 on the season.Â
