DALLAS- The Orange women's basketball team (8-1, 1-0) took down SMU (4-5, 0-1) on Sunday afternoon 78-69. Sophie Burrows led the team in scoring, tallying 22 points through five three-pointers and a perfect performance at the line.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Burrows kicked it off for the Orange, hitting a three-pointer early in the first quarter. 'Cuse kept up defensively, holding SMU scoreless for four minutes and 30 seconds after the opening tip. Uche Izoje blocked five shots as Laila Phelia shot a perfect 3-3 from the field, including two from beyond the arc to help put Syracuse up 25-8 in the first quarter.

A slower paced second quarter was still enough to give the Orange a 39-24 advantage heading into the second half. Burrows led in scoring, tallying six points from three perfect shots at the line and a three-point bucket.

Orange players across the board contributed to the third quarter's 59-44 total score. Phelia and Dominique Darius each added five points while Burrows and Madeline Potts each added three-point field goals. The Mustangs picked up the pace, scoring 20, but were unable to close the Orange's gap.

Journey Thompson stepped up in the fourth quarter, adding six points and going 2-2 on field goals and 2-2 from the line. Burrows scored another seven points to give her 22 points in this afternoon's matchup. The Orange kept up with SMU's momentum, winning their first conference game of the season 78-69.

Syracuse now leads the Mustangs 2-0 in all time matchups.
Uche Izoje collected a career-high eight blocks.
Izoje has tallied 5+ blocks in three-straight games.
