Cal Escapes 'Cuse, 75-69

Syracuse women's basketball (10-15, 4-10 ACC) lost a close contest to California (21-6, 9-5 ACC), 75-69, inside the Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, CA on Sunday afternoon. The Orange drop both games in their first conference road trip to the Bay Area and return home to face #12 North Carolina on Thursday night at the JMA Wireless Dome. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. and tickets are on sale now at cuse.com/tickets.

'Cuse's Georgia Woolley led in scoring with 23 points, tying her best offensive output of the season. Woolley was a perfect 7-7 from the line, while grabbing five rebounds and dishing out three assists. Woolley was joined by Kyra Wood (12 pts) and Sophie Burrows (10 pts) while Wood led the Orange in rebounds with eight. Freshman point guard Olivia Schmitt dished a team-best four assists in the contest.

The Golden Bears were paced in scoring by Kayla Williams with 21 points. Cal had four different players score in double figures.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first quarter was a game of runs, as Cal opened scoring with a quick five points to take the early lead. SU responded with an 8-0 run to take their first lead of the game about halfway through the frame. The Golden Bears took a 20-17 advantage into the second quarter, as both teams continued to battle. A late layup by Shy Hawkins gave the Orange a 35-34 lead going into halftime.

Neither Syracuse or California would give an inch during the third frame, as there would be four ties and four lead changes in the first four minutes of the second half. The Golden Bears earned a six-point lead with 2:22 to go in the third quarter, their largest lead of the game, before 'Cuse would cut the lead to just one point going into the final frame of action. Following a 5-0 run from Cal and 'Cuse respectively, the Golden Bears would hold on to the lead, making five free-throws in the closing seconds to take the win, 75-69.
