ERIE, PA. - Syracuse University women's ice hockey downed No. 2 seed Mercyhurst with a 1-0 shutout on Friday, securing game one of the AHA semifinals at Mercyhurst Ice Center. The Orange took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.
Syracuse (15-21-0, 11-9-0 AHA) struck first with a blistering shot from Charli Kettyle, set up by Stella Costabile and Nea Tervonen. Goalkeeper Allie Kelley kept a clean sheet in the net, making 47 saves across the 60 minutes.
Mercyhurst (18-15-2, 13-7-1 AHA) struggled to break through Syracuse's defensive wall and find the back of the net in all three periods. Goaltender Jorden Mattison stood tall between the pipes, turning away 14 shots to keep the Lakers within striking distance.
