Following a weekend win in California, Syracuse (10-12, 4-7 ACC) returns home to the JMA Wireless Dome on Wednesday night for a showdown with No. 2 Duke (19-2, 11-0). Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will air live on ESPN2.
Setting The Stage
The Orange closed out a two-game California swing Saturday with a 75-66 victory over California at Haas Pavilion. Lucas Taylor paced Syracuse with a season-high 19 points with J.J. Starling adding 18 points. The Orange held the Golden Bears to under 30-percent shooting from the field, limiting them to an 18-of-63 clip for the contest.
Duke enters Wednesday riding a 15-game winning streak and sits alone atop the ACC standings with an 11-0 mark in the conference. On Saturday, the Blue Devils defeated North Carolina, 87-70, at Cameron Indoor Stadium behind 22 points from Kon Knueppel and 21 by Cooper Flagg. Duke has not lost a game since Nov. 28 when then No. 1 Kansas topped the Blue Devils in Las Vegas.
The Blue Devils are led by head coach Jon Scheyer, who is in his third season at Duke after taking over for Mike Krzyzewski. Scheyer, who was a player on Duke's 2010 national championship team, is 73-20 at the helm of the Blue Devils, which includes a 40-11 mark against ACC opponents. He guided the Blue Devils to the Elite Eight a season ago
The Syracuse-Duke Series
Duke holds a 16-6 advantage all-time against Syracuse, which includes a 5-2 mark for the Blue Devils in games played at the Dome. Duke has defeated Syracuse in the last nine meetings between the teams, with the only matchup last season resulting in an 86-66 triumph for the Blue Devils at Cameron.
Syracuse last defeated Duke on Jan. 14, 2019, when Tyus Battle scored 32 points in a 95-91 overtime victory against the No. 1/2 Blue Devils. The last win over Duke at the Dome for the Orange came on Feb. 22, 2017, when John Gillon beat the Blue Devils at the final buzzer with a 3-pointer.
Starling Eclipses 1,000 Points
Starling surpassed 1,000 career points in the victory at California. The junior guard entered the night with 990 points and hit the 1,000 mark with a floater at the 15:09 mark of the second half. He finished the contest with 18 points to move to 1,0008 in his career.
Starling has scored 695 of those points over the past two seasons with the Orange after notching 313 as a freshman at Notre Dame. It took Starling 75 career games to reach the 1,000-point threshold, with the last 47 of those appearances coming with Syracuse.
After missing seven games earlier this season due to injury, Syracuse's leading scorer has recorded double figures in seven of his nine appearances since rejoining the lineup. He is averaging 16.7 points per contest over that span and has reached 20 points on four occasions.
Starling is averaging 17.9 points per outing on the campaign. His 38 points from the Orange's double-overtime victory against Youngstown State were a career high and the second most by any ACC player in a game this season.
Lampkin Climbs The Ladder
Against Pittsburgh on Jan. 25, Lampkin Jr. became the first Syracuse player to tally 23 rebounds in a game since Derrick Coleman did so against Villanova on March 10, 1990, at the Big East Tournament. Only two Syracuse players have grabbed more rebounds in a single game than Lampkin Jr. – Frank Reddout with 34 versus Temple on Feb. 9, 1952, and Dave Bing with 25 against Cornell on Feb. 8, 1966.
Lampkin's 23-rebound performance is one of the top 10 efforts on the glass in Syracuse history. Additionally, his 15 defensive rebounds versus the Panthers were the sixth most in a single game in Orange history, with the all-time Syracuse record sitting at 16. The 23 rebounds were also the most by any ACC player in a game since Armando Bacot also had 23 for North Carolina against James Madison on Nov. 20, 2022.
Lampkin Jr. is averaging 10.9 rebounds over the past 12 contests and has posted a double-double in five of the last eight outings. This season Lampkin Jr. is averaging 10.1 points and 9.0 rebounds per game.
Taylor Time
Taylor had a stellar all-around game in Syracuse's win at California, as the guard set or matched several season highs. He led the Orange with 19 points, his most in a game this season, while shooting 5-of-8 from the field and 3-of-5 from beyond-the-arc. The three triples matched his season high, while his six free throw makes (6-of-6) were also a season best.
On the glass, Taylor matched another season high with seven boards. Over the last three games, Taylor is averaging 11.3 points and 5.3 rebounds.
Reserve Contributions
Syracuse's bench continued to provide a boost for the Orange in the victory over the Golden Bears, as the team's reserves bested California's, 20-11. The Syracuse bench has now outscored its opponent's reserves in 17 consecutive contests.
Jaquan Carlos has provided a scoring spark from the bench in Syracuse's two-game California trip, as the guard averaged 12 per contest, highlighted by a 16-point effort versus Stanford where he went 6-of-6 from the field.
Over the last six games, Syracuse's bench is averaging 26.0 points. The best scoring effort from the Orange bench in that span came against Louisville, with Syracuse getting 36 points from its bench unit. Half of those points came from Chris Bell, who knocked down four 3-pointers on his way to an 18-point night.
Crashing The Glass
As a team, Syracuse grabs 37.8 rebounds per contest, the fourth most in the ACC. The Orange boast a plus-3.3 margin on the season and have recorded double-digit offensive boards 13 times on the campaign, which included 11 offensive boards Saturday in the victory at California.
Three different Syracuse players have pulled down 10 or more rebounds in a game this season – Lampkin Jr. (11 times), Freeman (seven times) and Davis (one time). Lampkin is third in the conference in rebounding (9.0 per game) and has double-digit boards in nine of the last 11 outings, while Freeman has hit double figures in two of his last three appearances.
Scouting Duke
Duke is led by Flagg, who is averaging 20 points per game in his true freshman season in Durham, the third best total in the ACC. Flagg had the best scoring effort of any player the conference this season against Notre Dame on Jan. 11 when he scored 42 points versus the Fighting Irish. Flagg also ranks in the top 10 in the ACC in field goal percentage, assists per game, blocks per game and steals per game.
Knueppel, another true freshman, is second on Duke with 13.5 points per game and leads the Blue Devils with 49 made 3-pointers on the season, the fifth most in the ACC. Tyrese Proctor also averages double figures (10.7) and has made 45 triples of his own on the campaign.
As a team, Duke is the third best scoring team in the ACC (80.3 points per game) and has made the second most 3-pointers in the conference with 211 on the season. The Blue Devils also boast the best scoring defense in the conference, allowing just 60 points per outing while allowing their opponents to shoot just 38-percent from the field. Duke is also the second-best rebounding team in the ACC (39.3 boards per game) and holds the best assist/turnover ratio in the conference at 1.66.
Freeman, Lampkin Jr. Make Preseason Watch Lists
Freeman is one of 20 players to make the preseason watch list for the 2025 Karl Malone Award, which recognizes the top power forwards in Division I men's basketball. Freeman, a McDonald's All-American and the second-highest Syracuse recruit in program history, is one of two freshmen to make this year's Malone Award watch list.
Freeman, who has missed the past eight games due to injury, has registered six double-doubles on the campaign and is averaging 15.3 points over his last nine appearances. He has scored 15 or more in six games over that stretch.
Lampkin Jr. is one of 20 preseason watch-list candidates for the 2025 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award, which goes to the top center in men's college basketball. Lampkin Jr. is in his first year with the Orange and is averaging 10.1 points and 9.0 rebounds per contest with eight double-doubles.
The list for both awards will be narrowed to 10 in late January, and then to just five in late February. In March, the five finalists for both awards will be presented to Abdul-Jabbar, Malone and the Hall of Fame's selection committee where winners will be selected.
Orange fans are encouraged to participate in three rounds of Fan Voting, presented by Dell Technologies, on hoophallawards.com.
