2/9/2025 4:09:00 PM | Women's Basketball
A 21-point performance from Georgia Woolley propelled the Syracuse university women's basketball (10-13, 4-8 ACC) over Wake Forest (8-11, 1-11 ACC), 62-50, on Sunday at the JMA Wireless Dome. The senior, Woolley, led the Orange with her scoring outing, while Sophie Burrows also contributed a 15-point, 10-rebound double double, her second of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Wake Forest jumped out to an early 17-11 lead after 10 minutes of play. The Demon Deacons then continued to extend their advantage, grabbing a 12-point lead with five minutes remaining in the first half.
The Orange began chipping away at their deficit late in the half when a Burrows make from beyond the arc started an 9-0 run for 'Cuse, but a Wake Forest buzzer beater at the half helped them to a 31-26 edge heading to the locker room.
Syracuse outscored the Demon Deacons, 13-10, in the third quarter to close the deficit to two points heading into the final 10 minutes of play. Less than two minutes into the fourth frame, a Woolley layup evened the score at 41. 'Cuse then kept its momentum going with a 5-0 run to earn its first lead of the day, 46-43, at the 7:01 mark. After Wake Forest reclaimed a two-point edge, the Orange notched a 5-0 run that included a massive three from Woolley to take its largest lead of the game to that point at 52-48. Syracuse continued its unanswered stretch with four additional points to bring its lead to 57-48 with a minute and a half to play.
The Orange added five makes at the charity stripe late, as they went on to win the game, 62-50. Syracuse's 23-9 fourth quarter effort was key in the win.
WHAT COACH JACK SAID
"We're getting better and we're coming," Head Coach Felisha Legette-Jack said in her postgame press conference. "We don't have any stop in us. Our young ladies are winning in that locker room, they're winning in practice, they're winning with their sisterhood and they're communicating with each other and eventually it's going to show on the court. Lately it's been doing that and I'm just so proud of them and so proud of these young people. I tend to get emotional that, you know we're dead in the water and no reason for them to fight like this but they see their dreams against their mirror and they say let's give it our best effort and as long as they give their best effort, I'll do my best effort and together I think we can."
G LEADS THE WAY
Woolley led the Orange in scoring for the 10th time this season, finishing the afternoon with 21 points on 6-of-13 (46 percent) shooting from the floor. Her scoring efforts were key in the second half, as 15 of her 21 points came in the last 20 minutes of play.
The senior's 21 points marked her third game this season with at least 20 points. She was two shy of her season best of 23, which was set against UAlbany on Nov. 20, 2024.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE BURROWS
After pouring in a career-best 28 points a game ago against Virginia Tech, Sophie Burrows provided another double-figure scoring performance with her 15 points against the Demon Deacons. She also led Syracuse in rebounds with 10, for her second double double of the season.
Burrows, who has been playing some of her best basketball as of late, is averaging 21.6 points across 'Cuse's last three contests.
TAKING CARE OF THE BALL
After turning the basketball over 11 times in the first half, the Orange came out in the second period and took much better care of the ball. In the final 20 minutes of the game Syracuse turned the ball over just twice, a key factor in their second-half turnaround that lifted the Orange to their victory.
OF NOTE
The Orange head to the West Coast for a pair of games against first-year ACC programs, Stanford and Cal. Syracuse will first face off against the Cardinal on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 10 p.m. ET before taking on the Golden Bears on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. ET. Both games will be aired nationally on ACC Network.
