
Tennis Sweeps Cornell in Opener

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University women's tennis team opened the spring season with a clean 7-0 sweep over visiting Cornell University Saturday afternoon at Drumlins Country Club.
The Orange (1-0) went clean through the doubles action as Nelly Knezkova and Anastasia Sysoeva picked up a 6-1 win over Victoria Zhao and Martina Marica. Syracuse's Monika Wojcik and Serafima Shastova sealed the doubles point with a 6-2 victory over Dylan Gelber and Emma Baker. The Orange pairing of Constance Levivier and newcomer Leena Bennetto won 6-4 in their doubles match against Sage Loudon and Andrea Martinez.
In singles action, Haram Kim made quick work of Marica at number six, going 6-1, 6-3 for the first singles point. Wojcik finished second with a 6-3, 7-5 victory at number four singles. Knezkova secured the win for the Orange at number three singles, dispatching Gelber 6-4, 6-4.
Sysoeva wrapped up at number two singles with a 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) win over Zhao at number two as Bennetto and Baker battled at number five singles. Bennetto ultimately won 6-1, 7-6 (10-8). Shastova and Loudon split their first sets before Shastova took over in the tiebreaker set to clinch the sweep 5-7, 6-2, 10-7.
Syracuse returns to Drumlins Country Club on Sunday for an 11 a.m. clash against another in-state foe, this time against Fordham. Sunday's action will be carried on Cuse.tv with live stats on Cuse.com.
