SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Orange women's basketball team (17-4, 7-3) defeated Georgia Tech (9-13, 4-6) 94-70 at the JMA Wireless Dome on Thursday evening. Laila Phelia and Dominique Darius each scored 20-plus points, helping SU push past the Yellow Jackets. Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Phelia put up the Orange's first points of the game, scoring a three-point shot from the corner off the tipoff. SU went on a 9-0 run, forcing the Yellow Jackets to call a timeout less than two minutes into the game. Phelia stole the ball from Georgia Tech midway through the first quarter, finding Uche Izoje in the paint and passing it back to a wide-open Sophie Burrows for the three-point basket. In three Georgia Tech possessions in a row, SU got their hands on the ball, adding to their six steals in the quarter. 'Cuse held Georgia Tech to 18-8 after the first ten minutes of play.Â
The Orange kept up defensively in the second quarter, blocking four shots and collecting nine defensive rebounds. Keira Scott's three-point shot brought the crowd to a roar, and Phelia's fast break layup increased SU's energy. Olivia Schmitt added three points to the board, hitting a shot from beyond the arc to extend the lead. Shy Hawkins found her way through a crowd of defenders under the net, drawing a foul and completing a three-point play. Syracuse closed out the first half with a 40-23 advantage, the largest margin against an ACC opponent this season. Â
Darius completed a three-point play, starting an Orange scoring streak. Darius followed up with a steal and field goal on the next drive, and Izoje found the net to claim her tenth double-double of the season. Darius' jumper rattled in as she drew a foul with 5.9 seconds left in the third quarter, adding three more points to SU's 71-50 lead over Georgia Tech. Â
Burrows blocked a Georgia Tech shot in the paint, finding Schmitt down the court, who gave it to Phelia to put in her third three-pointer of the night. The bench added 11 points in the fourth quarter and the team as a whole went 3-3 from the arc. SU's 54-point second half was enough to claim the 94-70 victory over the Yellow Jackets. Â
