WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- The Syracuse women's basketball team (13-2, 3-1) defeated Wake Forest (12-4, 2-2) 73-58 on the road. Sophie Burrows' four three-pointers and Uche Izoje's double-double allowed the Orange to remain undefeated in the Felisha Legette-Jack era over the Demon Deacons.Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
Izoje struck first for the Orange to get the thirteenth meeting between both teams started. Wake Forest was able to go on a run, but the Orange crept up, as Laila Phelia's three-point play helped put 'Cuse over the Demon Deacons for the remainder of the first quarter, leading 15-14.Â
A near steal by the Demon Deacons was swiped back by Kiera Scott who found the net for a layup. The Orange trailed after Wake Forest hit back-to-back three-point baskets, but SU kept up in the second quarter. Phelia's shot beyond the arc before the buzzer gave Syracuse a 32-31 advantage to close out the first half.Â
Burrows buried two deep three-pointers while Phelia added one from the corner to extend the Orange's lead in the third quarter. SU's defense kept Wake Forest scoreless for six minutes and 43 seconds of play as they increased the lead to 55-39 heading into the final quarter.Â
Shy Hawkins stepped in, shooting 2-2 from the field and 2-2 at the line to add six points to the score in the fourth quarter. Burrows added an additional two buckets from beyond the arc as the Orange claimed the 73-58 victory on the road.Â
