Steve Bush spent four years as SU’s quarterbacks coach and five as a member of the SU coaching staff. In 2003, SU quarterback R.J. Anderson set school single-season records for completions and pass attempts. The year before Bush tutored Troy Nunes and Anderson, whose names both appear in many of SU’s top 10 career record lists. In 2001, Anderson and Nunes each earned BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week recognition during the campaign.

In his first year on the staff, Bush coached the Orange defensive backs. Bush, who was the team captain at Southern Connecticut University during Paul Pasqualoni’s coaching tenure at the school, still holds the Southern Connecticut record for interceptions in one game with four. He was a team captain in 1981. Bush earned his undergraduate and master’s degrees at Southern Connecticut.
Bush came to Syracuse after serving as the head football coach at Manalapan (N.J.) High School from 1993-99. He was the head football coach and assistant lacrosse coach at Longmeadow (Mass.) High School (1990-93).
Ties to the NFL
Bush, who lettered in football for then-Southern Connecticut head coach Kevin Gilbride and Pasqualoni, has collegiate coaching experience at Boston University (1987-90), the University of New Haven (1986-87), Springfield College (1984-86) and Southern Connecticut (1982-84). While at SCSU, Bush worked as the secondary coach for Gilbride, a former NFL head coach and the current quarterbacks coach for the New York Giants.
At New Haven and Boston University, Bush was the defensive coordinator for Chris Palmer, the current offensive coordinator for the NFL’s Houston Texans. In addition to his duties as defensive coordinator, he coached linebackers at New Haven and the secondary at Boston University.
The Bush Family
Bush and his wife, Maria, have four children, Kacey, Kevin, Leah and Shane. Bush played high school football for his father, Harry Bush, who retired in 1999 after 50 years of coaching.
