SU v. Drexel
Saturday, December 18, 2004
Junior guard Gerry McNamara
On his lack of open shots:
“It was just a strange game for me. I only took one shot in the first half. It is tough for me to come back after a week off. When I get into a flow and a rhythm, I like to keep going and I think the week off slowed me down a little bit. I am glad that we played well as a team. Josh Pace told me at the end of the game, ‘keep your head up, you did just what a point guard should do in the second half.’ That is what I am proud of right now, just staying in the game and trying to run the offense.”
On if the game was frustrating:
“It really wasn’t frustrating, I just didn’t get shots. The shots that I did get I had to rush. I was just disappointed about my turnovers in the first half -- that is something that shouldn’t happen the rest of the year.”
On the play of the team:
“I thought tonight was one of our better games in terms of moving the ball and sharing the ball. We got some points in the paint. I think Darryl Watkins did a great job in there and he just improves every day. Terrence Roberts did a great job and Hakim Warrick and Josh Pace were their usual selves. We are starting to see guys develop.”
Sophomore center Darryl Watkins
On Drexel’s defense against Gerry McNamara:
“They were being pretty physical, I think they were trying to shake him up a little bit. He got his head into it and played well.”
On how he felt about his performance:
“It felt good to go out and get my first career double-double. It felt good to help the team get another win.”
Sophomore forward Terrence Roberts
On playing against some guys he knew from his hometown:
“I haven’t seen those guys in awhile, so it was good to go out there and see them. They played very well and it was a great environment out there tonight.”
On his aggressive play:
“That is my game and I have to come out, injury or no injury, and do the little things – get the rebounds and get some steals. I have to come out there and get it down when I get on the floor.”
Senior guard Josh Pace
On the play of Drexel:
“Drexel is a very aggressive, man-to-man team and we knew that coming in. We knew it was going to be a good game. We knew we had to play hard, the full 40 minutes, because they were going to be aggressive and they were not going to give up.”
On playing three games in five days:
“I think it is good, it is something that we need going into the Christmas break. We need to stay in the flow of things.”
On Gerry McNamara:
“This team played him very aggressive. I told him toward the end of the game that he was controlling the game, because he was opening things up for other players. I was able to make plays and Terrence Roberts and Louie McCroskey had some opportunities too. If teams are going to play him like that, then our other guys are going to win the game for us.”
On Darryl Watkins:
“He has been working hard in practice and you can see it in the games. He is making plays and so athletic he is getting better every day.”
Senior forward Hakim Warrick
On playing against Drexel:
“It was good. I know a bunch of the guys. I have played with them in the summer time. It was good to go out there and play against them. I knew coming in they were going to be scrappy and play really hard. I think we did a good job of going out there and executing. I think we could have done a better job in the zone, they really did a good job of passing.”
On the play of the team after a week off:
“It is tough coming off a week off and especially with finals. I think we responded fine and now we have two more games before Christmas break. We wanted to start this three-game swing an a good note and I think we did that.”
On Darryl Watkins:
“He really picked us up, he came out there with a bunch of energy. I think he set an example for other guys coming off the bench. If he plays like that it is going to be tough to beat us down the road.”
