Veteran football coach Jim Reid coached SU’s defensive line coach in 2004. Two of his pupils, defensive ends James Wyche and Ryan LaCasse, combined for 22 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks in 2004. The former Richmond head coach had previous BIG EAST Conference coaching experience from his tenure as the defensive coordinator at Boston College in 1994.
The Richmond Director
In his nine years as the head coach at Richmond, Reid led the Spiders to 48 wins, the third most of any coach in program history, and his club’s posted three of the top 12 records in the 122 years of program history. In 1995, his first season at the helm, Reid was named Yankee Conference Coach of the Year. He guided his squad to Atlantic 10 championships and Division I-AA playoff appearances in 1998 and 2000 and was named conference Coach of the Year after each of those campaigns. Three of his teams finished the season in the top 20 in the I-AA rankings.
Richmond’s best season under Reid’s direction came in 2000 when the Spiders established a program mark with 10 wins, including a 10-3 victory against Youngstown State in the I-AA playoff’s first round. More than 60 student-athletes earned All-Atlantic 10 honors during his tenure.

Seven of Reid’s former Richmond student-athletes are currently playing professional football. Shawn Barber (Kansas City Chiefs), Paris Lenon (Green Bay Packers) and Muneer Moore (New York Jets) are with NFL teams, while Adrian Archie (Montreal Alouettes), Marc Megna (Montreal Alouettes), Mark Thompson (Montreal Alouettes) and Winston October (Edmonton Eskimos) are playing in the Canadian Football League.
Familiarity with Eastern Football
Reid graduated from Maine in 1973 with a bachelor’s degree of science in education with specialties in history and physical education and earned a Master of Science degree in sports management from Massachusetts in 1975. He was a three-year starter at the Maine.
He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of Massachusetts in 1973 under Dick MacPherson, who was SU’s head coach from 1981 through 1990. After a two-year stint as a graduate assistant for the Minutemen, Reid was named a full-time assistant coach at UMass. He served as the defensive backs coach from 1975-77 and was promoted to defensive coordinator in 1978, a position he held until he was named head coach in 1986. Reid compiled a 36-29-2 record in six years and was the Yankee Conference Coach of the Year in 1988 and 1990 while at Massachusetts. He directed Massachusetts to three Yankee Conference championships.
Prior to his appointment as head coach at Richmond, Reid was the defensive coordinator at Boston College in 1994 after he had served in the same capacity at Richmond from 1992-93.
