Syracuse Notes
Freshman quarterback Joe Fields’ 14-yard run on the Orange’s first play from scrimmage tied his career long set last week versus Buffalo.
Sophomore punter Brendan Carney’s 59-yard punt on SU’s first possession was his career best.
Junior running back Damien Rhodes broke off a career-long 52-yard run in the first quarter. His previous career best was a 46-yard TD run versus Buffalo last week.
Junior tight end Joe Kowalewski’s catch from Perry Patterson in the first quarter was his first reception of the season. It was his first reception since a 33-yard touchdown catch versus Temple last season. Kowalewski finished the game with a career-best two catches.
Cincinnati’s blocked field goal was the first time since the Virginia Tech game last season that SU had one of its field goal attempts blocked (nine games).
Junior safety Anthony Smith intercepted his first pass of the season in the second quarter. He is the Orange’s active career leader with six picks.
Smith blocked his third punt of the season in the fourth quarter. It was his third blocked kick of the season, tying him with Steve Gregory (2002), Andre Brinson (2001) and David Tyree (2000) for the SU single-season record. Smith now has five blocks in his career, tying him with Tyree for the Orange’s career lead.
Smith’s 11 tackles moved him into 10th place on the SU career tackles by a defensive back list with 161. He passed Bryce Beville’s (1992-94) of 151.
Walter Reyes became the first Syracuse player ever to rush for 40 touchdowns with his six-yard scoring run in the second quarter. He is only the third player in BIG EAST history to run for 40 scores (Lee Suggs, Virgina Tech – 53; Avon Cobourne, West Virginia – 42).
Reyes moved into sixth place on the Syracuse all-purpose yardage list with 3,369 yards. His 117 yards versus the Bearcats moved him past Ernie Davis, James Mungro and Scott Schwedes.
Reyes’ 100-yard effort was the 11th of his career and first of the season. He is now tied for sixth with Jim Brown on the SU career list.
SU’s four interceptions were the most since the team picked off five against Tulane in 1999.
Junior tight end Cory Brooks made his first career start.
Junior defensive end James Wyche registered a career-high 1.5 sacks, including a seven-yard loss on a third down forcing a Cincinnati punt after the Bearcats had taken the ball inside SU’s 40-yard line.
Junior linebacker Tommy Harris and junior cornerback DeAndre Lacaille each recorded their first career fumble recoveries.
Both catches by senior receiver Andre Fontenette converted third downs for the Orange. The first was a 17-yard reception down the sideline that set up Reyes’ six-yard touchdown run. The second was a five-yard catch that kept SU’s third possession of the second half alive.
Perry Patterson’s 68-yard touchdown pass to Damien Rhodes was his first TD throw of his career. It was the longest catch of Rhodes’ career and the longest touchdown pass for the Orange since Johnnie Morant caught a 75-yard touchdown versus West Virginia in 2003.
Syracuse’s four interceptions are the most for the squad since five picks versus Tulane in 1999.
